After growing up on a small farm in Arkansas, Dr. Jenkins naturally wanted to study agronomy in college. He subsequently earned a Bachelor of Science in agronomy from the University of Arkansas, a Master of Science in genetics from Purdue University and Doctor of Philosophy in genetics from Purdue University. He began his career as a research associate in agronomy at the University of Illinois. One year later he was employed as a research geneticist for the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture at Mississippi State, Misissippi where he is in his 60th year of employment. Dr. Jenkins currently serves as the director of the Crop Science Research Laboratory for the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture located at Mississippi State, Mississippi.
Dr. Jenkins is additionally active as an adjunct professor of crop science and member of the graduate faculty at Mississippi State University. As a dedicated professional, he has completed research on host plant resistance to cotton insects and nematodes. Dr. Jenkins has also conducted investigations of basic causes of insect and nematode resistance in cotton plants and the development of factors which will confer resistance.
Dr. Jenkins is incredibly proud of his work mentoring more than 70 graduate students, many of whom have made significant discoveries in the field. For his achievements throughout his career, he was presented with the Cotton Geneticist Award, the Verdant Crop Genetics Award of the Year, the Mobay Cotton Research Recognition Award, the Agricultural Research Service Outstanding Scientist Award, and the USDA Superior Service Award. He was inducted into the ARS Science Hall of Fame and the Cotton Incorporated Hall of Fame. He received both the Meritorious Senior Professional Presidential Rank Award and the Distinguished Senior Professional Presidential Rank Award. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Plant Breeders. Dr. Jenkins is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Agronomy and the Crop Science Society of America.
