Dr. York accrued more than four decades of inimitable expertise in the field of medical education. During his tenure in academia, he simultaneously held faculty appointments at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock as a professor in the department of biochemistry, college of medicine, between 1968 and 2002 and the University of Tennessee in Memphis as an assistant professor of biochemistry in the college of basic medical sciences between 1965 and 1968. Prior to his role in teaching, Dr. York found success as a biochemist at the Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park, California.
Dr. York's extensive career in higher education included serving on multiple different committees. While active at the University of Arkansas, he found success as a member of the faculty-student liaison committee, the chairperson of the graduate council, a member of the college medical appeals board and, among others, the chairperson of the graduate assessment committee for the graduate school. Dr. York also conducted research as a visiting professor in the department of coagulation research at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, from 1974 to 1975, served as a visiting professor at Hendrix College during 2006 and excelled as a judge on behalf of the biochemistry division of the Arkansas State Science Fair.
A noted expert in protein chemistry, Dr. York has extensively studied the inner workings of enzymes, particularly regarding detoxifying drugs and other substances in the environment. When he was on sabbatical as a visiting professor at the Karolinska Institute, he notably had the opportunity to work in a blood coagulation laboratory, which was an extraordinary experience. As a seasoned scientist, Dr. York has authored several books as well, including "Review of Biochemistry" with Nathan Sloan in 1969, which was later translated into German in 1972, and "The Porphyrias" in 1972. He also contributed a chapter to the "Textbook of Biochemistry," "Enzymes" and authored numerous articles and abstracts to various scholarly journals.
A dedicated civic advocate, Dr. York has been a curator, board member of the Arkansas Audubon Society where he was responsible for creating a website for people to log bird sightings. He is also active on the advisory board of the Arkansas Wildlife Observation or Trails Program. Further, Dr. York is a parishioner, board member and volunteer at his local Methodist church, where he has donated his time to the food pantry and as a Sunday school teacher. Dr. York is also a past member of the River Mountain Park advisory committee of the Little Rock Parks Department.
To prepare for his career, Dr. York received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and mathematics at Harding College in 1958. He then spent four years as a National Institutes of Health (NIH) predoctoral research fellow at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore before earning a Doctor of Philosophy in physiological chemistry on campus in 1962. He then spent another two years at Johns Hopkins as a fellow in the department of physiological chemistry, school of medicine, until 1964.
To remain aware of developments affecting his area of expertise, Dr. York has maintained his affiliation with several pertinent organizations. He was elected as a fellow of the Swedish Medical Research Council, and has been a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Society of Biological Chemists and the Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association. Likewise, Dr. York served in positions of high leadership with the American chemical Society as the chairperson of the central Arkansas section, and with the American Association of University Professors, where he was active with numerous committees as a chairperson. Between 1966 and 1994, Dr. York was awarded numerous grants for his research from the NIH, the National Science Foundation, the Swedish Medical Research Council and the American Cancer Society.
