Among the responsibilities of her role, she consults with new and established hospital outpatient wound and ulcer management departments, physicians, podiatrists, nurse practitioners, wound nurses and more. Ms. Schaum also consistently monitors reimbursement legislation and regulations, attends reimbursement meetings and seminars and parlays that knowledge to her clients and various audiences in a digestible format. Over the years, she has led reimbursement strategies for more than 100 manufacturers, received Medicare billing codes for more than 400 wound/ulcer management products and provided executive reimbursement workshops for senior executives and reimbursement training for more than 4,000 sales and marketing representatives.
In light of her considerable expertise, Ms. Schaum has contributed to a regular payment strategies column in "Advances in Skin and Wound Care" for more than two decades. Additionally, she has authored the business briefs column in "Today's Wound Clinic," and continues to guest write for "Wound Management & Prevention" and "Advances in Wound Care." Recently recognized as a world expert in health care reimbursement (in the top 0.051%) through Expertscape, Ms. Schaum is the founder and co-presenter for the all-day symposium Wound Clinic Business, which is offered in 10 cities around the United States, and has parlayed her experience to others at local, state, regional and national symposia.
During the early stages of her vocational path, Ms. Schaum gained valuable expertise in the field as the director of medical products reimbursement for Smith and Nephew Inc., and as the director of reimbursement for Healthpoint Ltd., and Johnson & Johnson Medical Inc. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, she also worked in sales for Bimeco. While pursuing a formal education, Ms. Schaum received a Bachelor of Science in food service management from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1968 and a Master of Science in medical dietetics through The Ohio State University in 1972.
In light of her outstanding work, Ms. Schaum received the Golden Key Award from Johnson & Johnson Medical, and in 2009 she was bestowed with the Core Value Award via Healthpoint. She subsequently received the Industry Recognition Award from the American Professional Wound Care Association in 2010 and the VIP Woman of the Year Award for her work in reimbursement through the National Association of Professional Women in 2012. Within the next five years, Ms. Schaum aims to provide more virtual webinars and in-person reimbursement educational programs in the field and parlay her expertise in reimbursement to the general population.
