CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA, August 05, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Joel Rini, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Rini celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
A faculty member at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville for more than 30 years, Dr. Rini first joined the university in 1987 as an assistant professor of Spanish linguistics after obtaining his doctorate degree in Romance Linguistics. Beginning as an assistant professor of Spanish linguistics, he advanced to become a full professor of Spanish linguistics and philology, teaching within the department of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. During his tenure, Dr. Rini twice chaired the department between 1998 and 2004 and from 2013 until 2019. As a language educator and linguist, he notably specializes in the history of the Spanish language and has extensive expertise in the morphology of the language.
Dr. Rini is the author of two books, "Motives for Linguistic Change in the Formation of the Spanish Object Pronouns" in 1992, and "Exploring the Role of Morphology in the Evolution of Spanish" in 1999. He is currently working on a third book about the history of gender in the Spanish language. Dr. Rini has also contributed several dozen articles in various national and international scholarly journals on historical linguistics and Spanish historical grammar. In addition to his writings, he has presented numerous papers in the U.S. and abroad and, in 1996, spoke before the Association of Hispanists of Great Britain and Ireland as a distinguished foreign visitor.
Born in the U.S. as an Italian American, Dr. Rini always yearned to learn the language of his ancestors. However, his school did not offer Italian, so he chose to study Spanish and fell in love with the language. An alumnus of Kent State University, he received a Bachelor of Science in education, Spanish and French in 1981. Dr. Rini later acquired a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in Romance Linguistics at the University of Michigan in 1984 and 1987, respectively.
Blessed to be able to teach and conduct research in a subject that he holds such passion for, Dr. Rini has been most proud of the work he has done on behalf of the University of Virginia. Encouraged by his students every day, he has also been greatly inspired and influenced by his mentor, colleague and dear friend, Donald L. Shaw, who was a worldwide renowned scholar who specialized in Spanish and literature. Dr. Rini was the recipient of the Harrison Fund Salary Bonus for Excellence in Scholarship and Teaching. He also received a Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Teaching Award and was more recently acknowledged with an All-University Teaching Award from the University of Virginia in 2013.
