Mr. Walker has garnered a laudable reputation as the associate director of bands at North Mesquite High School for nine years. In his current position, he oversees the wind symphony, trombone choir and jazz band programs, as well as auditions. Throughout the course of his career in music education, he has used his position to teach such vital life skills as hard work, cooperation, integrity and problem solving. Mr. Walker commenced his professional journey as a junior high band director at Rockdale Junior High.
Introduced to music while coming of age, Mr. Walker joined his school band as a trombone player. Though he was not always first chair in the band, he always worked hard to perform well. During his last years of high school, he noticed that some fellow students were struggling to learn music, and soon found that he enjoyed teaching others. Mr. Walker went on to study music education at West Texas A&M University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 2008.
As an accomplished educator, Mr. Walker has ranked among the top 290 of more than 5,000 music educators nominated from all 50 states. In addition, he led his band to become state finalists in the Texas Music Educators Association Honor Band, and he was a quarter-finalist in the Grammy Music Educator Awards. Outside of his primary duties, he also volunteers with the Texas Music Educators Association Convention, and serves as a consultant, adjudicator and trombone performer, as well as a clinician for concert and jazz bands. Mr. Walker maintains his professional affiliation with the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Band Masters Association, the Texas Music Adjudicators Association, the Association of Texas Small School Bands, the Texas Jazz Educators Association, the National Association for Music Education, and the National Band Association.
