Now retired from an exemplary career as a solicitor and barrister, Mr. Singh concluded his career with the United Nations (UN) in New York City in 1999. As the chairperson of the headquarters committee on contracts and of the headquarters property survey board, he was responsible for reviewing contract award proposals and made award recommendation decisions with a budget of approximately $2 billion. Mr. Singh served as the chief of travel and transportation for the UN between 1969 and 1990. Prior to his work in the U.S., Mr. Singh worked for over a decade in his home country of Malaysia as an interpreter on behalf of the Royal Malaysian Police. Having saved enough money to finish his law degree in London, he ultimately became an advocate and solicitor for Allen and Gledhill Law Firm in Kuala Lumpur between 1967 and 1969. Mr. Singh subsequently traveled to the U.S., to take up an appointment with the UN in mid-1969.
Having enjoyed an exciting, yet sometimes dangerous career, Mr. Singh became deeply involved in his line of work due to a strong internal desire to be of service to mankind. At the UN he earned distinction as a team leader for the UN Peacekeeping force in Iraq for two years, during which time he was responsible for retrieving seized property back from President Sadaam Hussein. He also contributed a year's UN service in East Timor, Dili, conducting a referendum as to whether the inhabitants wanted independence or would prefer to remain as a part of Indonesia.
Extensively involved in his local community, Mr. Singh, maintained and monitored the vast Cunningham Park, served as 1st Vice president of the Community Advisory Board of the Queens Hospital Center, and as the President of Queens Civic Congress, an official delegate of the Queens Borough President's General Assembly, an advisory board member of the Flushing Meadows Corona Park conservancy committee and a committee member of Queens Health Congress. He is the former founder president of the Sikh American Friendship Foundation, between 2002 and 2018. Actively involved with several law-related organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, Mr. Singh has also been a member of the Asian-Pacific American Labor Alliance, the Association for Better New York and several others professional societies. Often, he participated in the front line in peaceful rallies and protests where he also made moving speeches. He was particularly noticeable in the National Women's Rights march held in January 2016. He has been a delegate to the Judicial Convention on behalf of the Democratic Organization of Queens County for the appointment/promotion of judges in Queens County.
Mr. Singh received a Barrister-at-Law from the Honorable Society of Lincoln's Inn in London in 1967. Years later, he acquired a Master of Arts in International Law and Public Administration at Saint John's University in New York in 1981. Regarded as a leading light in his field, he was bestowed over two dozen awards and recognitions by various U.S. congressional representatives, New York state senators, assembly members and council members, as well as the comptroller of New York. Since his retirement from the UN, he continued to enjoy the comraderies with some of the heads of states and governments for a considerable time afterwards. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Singh has been showcased in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Whos' Who in Finance and Industry and Who's Who in American Law.
