Bernard Leo Remakus, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Remakus has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the medical field.

HALLSTEAD, PA, August 10, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Bernard Leo Remakus, M.D. with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Remakus celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

A native of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Dr. Remakus received the bachelor of science degree from King's College, master of education degree from East Stroudsburg State College, and medical doctorate from Temple University. He completed a three-year residency in internal medicine at Abington Memorial Hospital, which led to his certification as a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Financing every phase of his education with scholarships and part-time work, Dr. Remakus was forced to compete with 6,000 other qualified students for one of the 180 seats at the Temple University School of Medicine. Undeterred by four years of rejection letters from Temple, and constantly encouraged by his parents, sisters, and future wife, Dr. Remakus was accepted by Temple on his fifth application.

While at Temple, Dr. Remakus achieved the rare feat of completing each of his required third-year clinical rotations and fourth-year sub-internship with honors. During the residency application process, he achieved another unusual feat by being ranked as the top candidate of multiple residency programs.

Before he began his formal medical education, Dr. Remakus worked as a high school science teacher and athletic coach, college teaching assistant, and hospital laboratory director. Reflecting on his unusual path to medical school and experiences in medical education, he later authored the medical novel, "Keystone."

Dr. Remakus has practiced medicine at the same location in Hallstead, Pennsylvania for the past 40 years. During that time, he has served a rural, physician-shortage community, and proudly made pro bono care, house calls, and 24/7 emergency services hallmarks of his practice. He has made it a policy to never charge a patient or members of their family during periods of unemployment or loss of health insurance.

A member of the medical staff of the Barnes-Kasson County Hospital in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania since 1981, Dr. Remakus has previously served as the hospital's Chief-of-Staff, Emergency Department Director, and Ethics Committee Chairman. While serving as a Clinical Assistant Professor of the Health Science Center of the State University of New York and Temple University School of Medicine, he taught medical students and residents in his office, the homes of his patients, and the various departments of the Barnes-Kasson County Hospital.

Throughout his professional life, Dr. Remakus has taught at the high school, college, and medical school levels. He inspired one of his high school chemistry students to pursue a career in medicine, and years later, taught the same student in medical school.

A prolific, award-winning author, Dr. Remakus has published four novels, "Keystone," "Cassidy's Solution," "Mia," and "The Lame Duck," three works of non-fiction, "The Malpractice Epidemic: A Layman's Guide To Medical Malpractice," "Medicine From The Heart," and "Medicine Between The Lines," and one screenplay, "Mia." He has also authored more than 200 scientific articles that have been published in: The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of the American Medical Association, Newsweek, Medical Economics, The Archives of Internal Medicine, Internal Medicine News, Consultant, Geriatrics, Modern Medicine, Medical World News, Hospital News, The American Magazine, Pride, KevinMD, and Internal Medicine World Report. Many of these articles have been reprinted in popular newspapers and magazines.

From 1991 to 2002, Dr. Remakus was the featured columnist and a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the medical publication, Internal Medicine World Report. His column in that publication had the distinction of being one of the most widely-read and longest-running physician-written columns in America.

When not practicing medicine or writing, Dr. Remakus serves as a professional speaker and publisher of 221 East Publishing. In previous years, he also performed clinical drug research, worked as a medical examiner and consultant, and coached the Blue Ridge High School Baseball Team to a league championship and four post-season district playoff appearances in six seasons.

Recognized by the publication, Collegiate Baseball, as "the only medical doctor in the United States to serve as head coach of a high school varsity baseball team," Dr. Remakus was instrumental in helping more than a dozen high school baseball, softball, basketball, and volleyball players from Susquehanna County obtain athletic, academic, and financial need scholarships at Division-One, Two, and Three colleges and universities. He also provided generous yearly financial support to several county athletic programs, and helped a number of high school baseball players get tryouts with major league teams.

The recipient of numerous awards and citations, Dr. Remakus has received twelve Physician's Recognition Awards from the American Medical Association, a 15-Year Teaching Service Award from the Health Science Center of the State University of New York, citations for his research in the Capoten Evaluation Program and Tenormin Evaluation Program, listing in every edition of America's Top Physicians since 2003, and a Bronze medal at the 2019 Readers' Favorite International Book Awards.

Dr. Remakus' greatest source of pride is his family. He and his wife, Charlotte, have been married 45 years, and their three children, Christopher, Alexandra, and Matthew, all followed in their father's footsteps, graduated from the Temple University School of Medicine, and became successful physicians.
