After receiving a Bachelor of Science in education, Ms. Gonder became an instructor at a mental health center in Columbia, Missouri. During the time she was working, mental health patients and disabled individuals faced such struggles as discrimination and stigma, inspiring her to make changes in the field that could alleviate such issues. Ms. Gonder soon received a Master of Education in special education from the University of Missouri and a Master of Education in counseling from Lincoln University. She is also certified in elementary education, behavioral disorders, learning disabilities, counseling, psychological examination and adaptive physical education.
Throughout the course of her career, Ms. Gonder served as a diagnostician staffing coordinator for the Non-Public By-Pass Program, a psychological examiner for the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, a coordinator of Project Lift-Up at Lincoln University, a diagnostician for Metro Business College and a teacher and psychological examiner for Jefferson City Public Schools. In addition to these primary positions, she also served as a program consultant at Lincoln University and an adjunct professor. Ms. Gonder was also an author, editor, vice president, secretary and special programming consultant for Osage Bend Publishing Company.
Ms. Gonder notably served as a consultant for various volunteer and education programs, and established the Parents for Learning Disabled Students Program. Throughout her career, she has been able to evaluate many educational programs, through which she was able to develop her own criteria, which focuses on an individual child's life and specific skills. Ms. Gonder's program has inspired many of her students to go on to become successful professionals in their own right.
As a respected educator, Ms. Gonder has been recognized for her contributions to her field. She was named as the International Special Education Teacher of the Year and Missouri State Special Education Teacher of Year by the Missouri Federation Council for Exceptional Children. She was also named as the National Woman Teacher of the Year, which allowed her to travel and meet with national educators, make lasting industry connections and share her experiences. Ms. Gonder has attributed her professional success to being an advocate for all children and always striving to create positive change for those in need. She maintains her professional and community affiliation with the Missouri State Teachers Association, the Council for Exceptional Children, the Learning Disabilities Association, the General Federation of Women's Clubs, the honorable society of Delta Kappa Gamma and the American Legion.
