Mr. Kahn was a Distinguished Military Graduate from The Citadel in 1958 and commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force at that time. He was Editor of The Citadel newspaper, The Brigadier, President of the Calliopean Literary Society and Vice-President of Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society. He was listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
He graduated from the University of South Carolina Law School in 1961 where he was on the Editorial Board of the S.C. Law Quarterly and President of Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity.
Following graduation from law school and passing the South Carolina Bar, he served in the Air Force as a Judge Advocate, attaining the rank of captain. While in the Air Force, he did graduate work in law at Southern Methodist University Law School.
After active duty in the Air Force, he served as a law clerk for U.S. District Judge Robert W. Hemphill from 1964 to 1966, before returning to Charleston to engage in the private practice of law. He founded Kahn Law Firm and practices law with his son, Justin, and Wes Allison. He dearly loves practicing law as a trial lawyer and he had the honor of serving as President of the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association.
He was admitted to practice law in South Carolina and the District of Columbia. He was also admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court, the Fourth and Fifth Circuit Courts of Appeals, the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina and the Western District of Texas as well as the U.S. Court of Military Appeals. He is a permanent member of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals Judicial Conference and was on the U.S. District Court Rules Advisory Committee for 12 years. He is particularly proud to be a member of the Charleston County Bar.
Kahn is Board Certified by the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys, having served as treasurer for four years and its Board of Governors since 1989. He is Board Certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy, serving on its National Board of Directors for eight years. He is also Certified by the S.C. Supreme Court as a Civil Mediator.
He frequently lectures on legal issues for legal professional groups in South Carolina and other parts of the country, also lecturing for medical groups at MUSC, Dartmouth Medical School and Weill Cornell Medical College as a visiting professor. He was an Adjunct Professor of Medical Jurisprudence at the Medical University of SC from 1975 to 1987.
He was a member of and served as President of the Charleston Jewish Federation, Dan Lodge of B'nai B'rith, the Hebrew Benevolent Society and the Hebrew Orphan Society. He also chaired and co-chaired several fund raising drives for Jewish communities in distress.
Kahn was the first President of the Charleston Jewish Federation Endowment Fund, Board Member of the Charleston, SC Jewish National Fund and on the National Council of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee from 1982-1988.
He served on the Board of the Miriam B. Wilson Foundation that administered the Old Slave Mart Museum, the Advisory Board of the South Carolina Organ Procurement Agency (Chairman for 8 years), the Advisory Board of the YWCA of Greater Charleston for 36 years and continues to serve on the Advisory Board of The Citadel Inn of Court.
Along with his wife, Janice, he was co-founder of the Janice & Ellis Kahn Endowment Fund for Jewish Education and Preservation of Jewish Historical Sites and the Ellis I. Kahn,'58 Scholarship Endowment Fund for Jewish Cadets at The Citadel.
He won the City of Charleston handball championship (singles) in 1952 and the Waco, Texas handball championship (doubles) in 1963.
He has strong thoughts about charity, tzadakah in Hebrew, knowing that you've done the right thing in relation to the good fortune you have had the privilege of experiencing. It is truly a blessing to be on the giving end of need, as opposed to being on the receiving end of need. One should fully appreciate and savor that blessed circumstance and act accordingly.
