Born 1926 in Prague, Czech Republic. Dr Babuska is the son of a leading Czech Architect (1884-1953) who among others designed the National Technical Museum and Museum of Agriculture in Prague. When he was young he was interested in the computational engineering. He was also involved in the design of the dam Orlik in the Czech Republic.
Dr Babuska studied the civil engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague. He graduated with the diploma of engineer and obtained later the Doctor of the Technical Sciences from The Technical University. He studied then mathematics at the Mathematical Institute of Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. He received then the Ph D in mathematics and Doctor of Sciences.
Dr Babuska began his career as research fellow at the Mathematical Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Prague, where he advanced to the post of the head of the department of partial differential equations. In 1968 he immigrated to the United States as professor at the University of Maryland at College Park. He retired at Maryland 1995 as distinguished professor and became Robert B Trull Chair Professor of Engineering, Professor of Mathematics and ICES Senior Research Scientist of University of Texas at Austin. In 2018 he retired as Robert B Trull Chair Professor Emeritus in Engineering.
Dr Babuska cofounded ESRD Inc which developed the StressCheck finite element software which is used in engineering practice. He published more than 320 papers, 70 papers in conferences proceedings and 8 books which some were translated to different languages. He was member of editorial boards of scientific Journals and is honorary editor of some.
In his field, Dr Babuska is renowned for his work in the finite element method (FEM), proof of the Babuska—Lax-- Milgram theorem in partial differential equations. A notable results in the finite element method is Ladyzenskaja- Babuska- Brezzi condition which have many important application in the Finite Element method. The partition Unity and the Generalized Finite elements introduced by Dr Babuska are widely used in the FEM in the practice. He is also known for his a- posteriori error estimation, adaptive FEM, homogenization and others.
For his achievement through his career Dr Babuska has amassed numerous accolades. He received 5 honorary doctorates, is member of European Academy of Sciences, US National Academy of Engineering, Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Sciences of Texas, The Learned Society of Czech Republic, Engineering Academy of Czech Republic and others. Asteroid 36060 was named Babuska by the International Astronomical Union. He is Fellow of SIAM (American Mathematical Society and Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics), IACM (International Association of computational Mechanics), USACM. Among others he received Czechoslovak State Prize for Mathematics, Leroy P Steele Prize for Lifetime achievements, ICAM Congress Medal, von Neumann medal, Medal de Scientia Huminitate Optima Merit of Academy of Sciences Czech Republic, Bolzano medal, Birkhoff Prize, Neuron Prize, Humboldt Award of Federal Republic of Germany.
Dr Babuska is the proud father of two children, Lenka and Vit and loving husband of his late (+2020) wife Renata.
