MARTINEZ, GA, August 13, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Col. Eric Martin, DO, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Col. Martin is a military physician who was a prior United States Army Special Forces flight surgeon and dive medical officer (DMO). He currently is a vascular surgeon celebrating more than 20 years of clinical excellence and leadership. He is double board certified in the specialties of general surgery and vascular surgery. His interest in both medicine and the military began after watching the 1982 Sylvester Stallone film "First Blood," which impressed upon him the sobering reality that every person has within them the capacity to either do great harm or immense good. He also learned about pushing limits and never surrendering no matter how insurmountable the odds. An alumnus of the Michigan State University, Col. Martin earned a Bachelor of Science in physiology and a Master of Science in exercise physiology before returning to complete a Doctor of Osteopathy degree in 1994. He undertook an internship, residency and additional coursework through Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Doctors Hospital Ohio Health Medical System in Columbus, Ohio. He is licensed to practice medicine in Georgia.
Seeking a highly demanding specialty that would allow him to play a key role in each patient's recovery process, Col. Martin was drawn to vascular surgery, and accepted a prestigious two-year fellowship at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He also trained at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation during his vascular fellowship. He served as a flight surgeon and high-altitude medical specialist in the United States Army 10th Special Forces Group at Fort Carson, Colorado. In addition, he worked as a member of an elite surgical resuscitation team (SRT) for JSOC (Joint Special Operations Command) during the Iraq War. This was a formative period which developed his propensity for treating patients in such a way that emphasized addressing the human condition as well as the disease process itself. In 2012, Col. Martin was named as Chief of Vascular Surgery at Eisenhower Army Medical Center (EAMC), where he oversees and provides complex reconstructive and interventional procedures combing hybrid technology treating a broad diversity of vascular pathology.
In the fall of 2017 he was nominated to become Chief of Surgery at EAMC and holds this position currently. His leadership has been inspiring for others within his community. He leads by example in his actions, words and deeds. He approaches each day with great humility and displays a tireless commitment to be the best.
In 2014 Dr. Martin became involved with regenerative reconstruction and stem cell therapy for treatment of complex chronic wounds involving decubitus ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, arterial ulcers and venous statis ulcers. He pioneered several techniques on how to transplant amniotic and chorionic membrane tissue into the human body. He has spoken nationally throughout the United States educating other physicians on his techniques advancing and progressing the orchestration of regenerative reconstruction.
In gratitude for his service to the medical profession, Col. Martin was elected as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons and the Society of Vascular Surgery. Among other accolades, he has been named among the Top Doctors in Augusta, and was recognized for his excellence in resident supervision with a 2018 Norman Rich Teaching Award for academic excellence. Moreover, Col. Martin was bestowed with a Teaching Excellence Award for Surgical Subspecialties from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
Col. Martin lives by the credo that "life's battles do not always go to the strongest or fastest man, but to the man that believes that he can," and considers optimism, tenacity and a dedication to patient care and service to be key to his success. In the coming years, he looks forward to transitioning to academia as a civilian vascular surgeon, devoting more time to working with surgical residents and becoming involved with humanitarian medical missions throughout the world. To remain aware of developments affecting his field, Col. Martin maintains his affiliation with the American Osteopathic Association and the Georgia Society of the American College of Surgeons.
