Dr. Nathan Wong is a renowned cardiovascular epidemiologist and specialist in preventive cardiology. He is currently Professor and Director, Heart Disease Prevention Program, Division of Cardiology at the University of California, Irvine in California where he has been on faculty since 1988. He also holds joint appointments in epidemiology at both UC Irvine and UCLA. Dr. Wong attended Pomona College in California, where he attained a Bachelor of Arts in 1983 in Chemistry followed by receiving his MPH and PhD degrees in epidemiology from Yale University in 1985 and 1987, respectively.
Dr. Wong has specialized in outcomes research on diabetes, lipids, subclinical atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease for more than 30 years, and has also been an investigator on numerous clinical trials on lipids and other aspects of preventive cardiology.
He is one of the original researchers linking coronary calcium deposits to future cardiovascular disease risk. He has participated as an investigator or collaborator with major studies of cardiovascular disease including the Framingham Heart Study, Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, Cardiovascular Health Study, and was also a co-principal investigator of the Women's Health Initiative. He has authored over 350 peer-reviewed manuscripts and seven textbooks, including co-editing "Preventive Cardiology: Companion to Braunwald's Heart Disease" and "ASPC Manual of Preventive Cardiology," as well as being the editor-in-chief of two editions of the textbook "Preventive Cardiology". He is currently executive editor of the American Journal of Preventive Cardiology, an editor for Global Heart, editorial board member of several other journals, and editor for the Diabetes and Cardiometabolic Clinical Topic Collection for ACC.ORG. Dr. Wong lectures locally, nationally and internationally on various topics in preventive cardiology and enjoys teaching and mentoring students, medical residents, and cardiology fellows. He has also been interviewed on numerous occasions by major television networks, such as ABC Eyewitness News and CBS News, and has appeared in articles featuring in the LA Times, the Orange County Register, USA Today and, among others, the New York Times.
An elected fellow of the American Society for Preventive Cardiology, the National Lipid Association, the American Heart Association, Council on Epidemiology and Prevention and the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Wong has also served as the president of the Pacific Lipid Association and American Society for Preventive Cardiology and is an honorary life member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. He is also a past-chair of the Prevention Science Subcommittee for the American Heart Association and Research and Publications Subcommittee for the American College of Cardiology Diabetes Collaborative Registry. Currently, Dr. Wong is president-elect of the Interamerican Heart Foundation promoting advocacy and research on heart health in Latin America. In 2011, Dr. Wong was the recipient of Jan Kellerman Memorial Award for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and received a Distinguished Fellowship from the International Academy of Cardiology in 2014 from the International Academy of Cardiology. Though Dr. Wong's work educating healthcare providers in the Southeastern European Balkan Region, he was elected an International Academician of the Republic of Srpska Academy of Sciences and Arts, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as elected a full professor of the European Center for Peace and Development established by the United Nations for his work co-directing an annual summer school on cardiovascular diseases in the region.
A native of Southern California, Dr. Wong is a long-time resident of Dana Point, California. He is an avid outdoorsman, enjoying skiing, hiking, bicycle riding, kayaking, and paddleboarding, and has been a member of the Sierra Club since 1978 and a lifetime member of the Yosemite Institute. He was also a mountain climber having attained his Sierra Peaks Section emblem from the Sierra Club in 1988. Dr. Wong also volunteers for the American Heart Association and other organizations.
