Dr. Schaufelberger began his career in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after earning his bachelor's degree in 1964. Serving in the U.S. Army over the next 30 years, he served in Saudi Arabia as a deputy district engineer charged with building a city for 75,000 people. In addition, Dr. Schaufelberger held leadership positions in Virginia and Texas before serving in Germany as assistant deputy chief of staff, engineer at U.S. Army Europe between 1990 and 1992.
Retiring as a colonel in 1994, Dr. Schaufelberger's final assignment was as the commander of the Missouri River Division in Omaha, Nebraska, where he was responsible for all Corps of Engineers' activities in the Missouri River Basin including recovery from historic flooding in 1993. During his military career, he completed two tours of duty in Vietnam and served three years on the faculty at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York.
After retiring from the U.S. Army, Dr. Schaufelberger was recruited as a faculty member at the University of Washington. Initially hired as an assistant professor of construction management, he advanced to the positions of associate professor and professor within the department. Dr. Schaufelberger's tenure at the University of Washington also included serving as department chairperson from 2002 to 2014 and the Dean of the College of Built Environments between 2012 and 2019.
The author of several books in his field, Dr. Schaufelberger recently co-authored "Construction Superintendents: Essential Skills for the Next Generation," which was published in 2020. The first college-level textbook of its kind, his book prepares students for the responsibilities of a site supervisor on a complex jobsite. It also covers the various tasks of superintendents and outlines the development of the superintendent in their respective role. Dr. Schaufelberger's other books include the second edition of "Construction Equipment Management" in 2019 and "Management of Construction Projects: A Constructor's Perspective" in 2017.
Dr. Schaufelberger has attributed much of his success over the years in part to his ability to bring people together from diverse perspectives and discover ways to have them collaborate. His approach to teamwork has been extremely beneficial. Dr. Schaufelberger is also grateful to the many incredible individuals he has had the pleasure of working alongside, both in the military and in academia.
Dr. Schaufelberger initially earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering at the University of Idaho in 1964. He subsequently graduated from the University of Illinois after obtaining a Master of Science in 1970 and a Doctor of Philosophy in civil engineering in 1971. Dr. Schaufelberger has been a registered professional engineer in the state of Virginia since 1974
Aligned with several key professional organizations relative to his career, Dr. Schaufelberger is a member and the past president of the Washington Society of Professional Engineers. He is further affiliated with the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Society of Military Engineers. A lifetime member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Dr. Schaufelberger was elected to the National Academy of Construction in 2009.
For his exemplary service in the military, Dr. Schaufelberger was decorated with a Distinguished Service Medal by the U.S. Army. He was later recognized as the Academic Engineer of the Year by the Puget Sound Engineering Council in 2001 and the Educator of the Year by the Mechanical Contractors Association of America in 2009. Furthermore, he was presented with the Brian D. Dunfield Educational Service Award by the American Association of Cost Engineering International in 2009. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Schaufelberger has been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
