With a Bachelor of Engineering from Yale University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Cornell University, Mr. Spencer began his career as an examiner with the U.S. Patent Office. He was admitted to practice law in Washington, D.C. and New York, and subsequently became an associate at Toulmin & Toulmin, a law firm that had obtained the early patents for the Wright Brothers. Following this appointment, he found success as the senior founding partner of Spencer & Frank whose partners included a former Commissioner of Trademarks and a former Register of Copyrights, and later, as a partner at Venable LLP. For a decade and a half, he served of counsel to various intellectual property law firms. Mr. Spencer also earned distinction with the U.S. Army in the Signal Corps and Judge Advocate General Corps. where he obtained the rank of Captain.
In addition to his primary duties in law, Mr. Spencer also served as a master of the bench of Giles S. Rich American Inn of Court, as a lecturer at the World Trade Institute and various European institutes, as a moot court judge at various law schools, as an arbitrator and mediator in intellectual property law matters, and on a panel of mediators of the U.S. International Trade Commission. Throughout the course of his career, he has been most grateful to manage his own law firm, which he has grown to employ 20 attorneys. At this firm, Mr. Spencer was able to secure major European businesses as clients, including Krupp, Allgemeine Electricitaets Gesellschaft, Olympia Werke, Glaverbel, and Adidas where he knew its founder, Adolph "Adi" Dassler, a prominent shoemaker and entrepreneur for whom he registered the famous Adidas three-stripe logo.
Today, Mr. Spencer maintains his professional affiliation with the American Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Lawyer-Pilots Bar Association and the International Trade Commission Trial Lawyers Association. Outside of his vocation, he enjoys aviation, music, poetry and linguistic studies in German and French. He holds a commercial pilot certificate and is the recipient of the Master Pilot Award issued by the Federal Aviation Administration, which is given to pilots who have had no accidents or violation for fifty years.
A dedicated father, Mr. Spencer is proud of his children, two of whom are doctors, one of whom is a lawyer, one who is the head of a large private school, another who is a certified social worker and another who is a speech pathologist.
