Dr. Philippou is esteemed as a noted pharmacologist and toxicologist celebrating more than 60 years of contributions to the scientific body of knowledge. He pursued an education at the University of Athens, earning a Doctor of Medicine in 1959, and was designated as an Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung fellow immediately following his graduation. Dr. Philippou utilized the aforementioned fellowship to work in the department of physiology at the University of Cologne until 1960 and the department of pharmacology at the University of Frankfurt until 1962.
In 1965, Dr. Philippou was recognized with Privatdozent status by the University of Frankfurt, and began teaching in the department of pharmacology at the Medical School of the University of Duisburg-Essen. From 1970 to 1982, he was appointed as the head of the department of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Wuerzburg. During his tenure at the University of Wuerzburg, Dr. Philippou was invited as a visiting faculty member at institutions throughout Europe and Asia, including the College de France, the Mill Hill Institute of Medical Research in London, and the Central Drug Research Institute of Lucknow.
Dr. Philippou led the department of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Innsbruck from 1982 until 1999. Having contributed extensively to books and professional journals, he is a former member of the editorial board of Clinical and Experimental Hypertension, Nanuyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology and the Journal of Autonomic Pharmacology, among others. He is the author of "New Aspects of the Role of Adrenoceptors in the Cardiovascular System" in 1986, and the seminal multivolume text "History and Achievements of the Departments of Pharmacology, Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology in the German Speaking Countries," whose most recent addendum was published in 2014.
