From a young age, Dr. Carbone excelled in mathematics and harbored a natural ability to teach others. She was soon inspired to venture into academia, earning a Bachelor of Science in mathematics education and Master of Education in mathematics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She also obtained a Doctor of Education from the University of Pittsburgh and certifications as a secondary mathematics teacher in the state of Pennsylvania. Dr. Carbone began her career as a teacher for the Greater Latrobe School District.
Subsequently, Dr. Carbone found success as an instructor at Westmoreland County Community College, the Pennsylvania State University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She also served at Indiana University of Pennsylvania as a mathematics specialist and a program coordinator of the Statistics Education for Quantitative Literacy (SEQuaL) program. Dr. Carbone further flourished at Clarion University of Pennsylvania, for which she worked as an assistant professor, an associate professor and a full professor in the mathematics department before her retirement as professor emeritus in 2011.
In addition to her primary academic appointments, Dr. Carbone has presented her work at the International Congress in Mathematics Education, as well as the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' national meeting. She has given 71 professional presentations. She also published a book, titled "Mathematics for Elementary and Middle School Teacher: Connections to Real Life Experiences." Many of Dr. Carbone's 59 articles have also been featured in international publications, including several papers with P.A. Eaton, including "Asking Those Who Know: A Collaborative Approach to Continuing Professional Development, Teacher Development" for the International Journal of Teachers' Professional Development, "Findings from Two Countries Regarding Prospective Teachers' Knowledge of Addition and Division of Fractions" for the Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Mathematics Education in a Global Community, "Forming Partnerships to Improve Mathematics Teaching" for the Proceedings of The Humanistic Renaissance in Mathematics Education Conference in Palermo, Sicily, "Teaching, Technology, and Teamwork" for the Proceedings of Scuola Superiore G. Reiss Romoli 2002 Summer International Conference on Advances in Infrastructure for e-Business, e-Education, e-Science, and e-Medicine on the Internet Conference in Aquila, Italy, "Collaborations Between Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Colleges of Education to Accomplish Change" for the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education National Conference, and "Interfacing Technology with Mathematics and Science Education Through the Use of Computers and Calculators" for the Advancing the Development of Educators Through Technology Conference.
For her numerous accomplishments and contribution in her field, Dr. Carbone has received much recognition throughout her career. She was honored as the Civic Leader of the Year by Indiana Community Civic Clubs and a Distinguished Lecturer in the College of Arts and Science at Clarion University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Carbone was also recognized as the primary grant writer for the Partnership in Preparing Master Mathematics Teachers (P2M2T), and the project director of several other grants including Funding for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE), Technology Advancing a Continuous Community of Learners (TACCOL), Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology (PT3), and the Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation Level II Grant. She was the principal investigator for over one million dollars in grants to Clarion University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Carbone has attributed her many professional successes to her fourth-grade teacher, Nancy Mercer, who helped foster her academic curiosity. In addition, she is grateful for the guidance that she accrued from Dr. Jack Shepler at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Dr. Martin Cohen at the University of Pittsburgh. All of Dr. Carbone's aforementioned mentors functioned as influential figures in the early stages of her education and career.
Civically, Dr. Carbone has been active with the Clarion Community Choir, and previously operated as the Clarion Walk chairperson of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She was recruited to the board of directors of Clarion Campus Ministry and was active in the Clarion Civic Club as well as various state and local boards for the American Diabetes Association. She also was a member of the American Association of University Professors, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Mathematics Council of Western Pennsylvania, the American Mathematical Society, the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators, the Association of Mathematics Teachers in Northwestern Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Association of Mathematics, the State System of Higher Education Mathematics Association, the American Diabetes Association, Phi Delta Kappa and Pi Mu Epsilon. In her spare time, Dr. Carbone enjoys singing, traveling, photography, gardening, playing the piano and enjoying her six grandchildren.
