Drawing inspiration from his father, who established the law firm in 1948 and went on to serve as a state representative and senator throughout the 1950s, he has earned distinction for his expertise in banking, eminent domain, insurance and real estate litigation, and for his commitment to representing local governments, utilities and insurers. Representing the entire Atlanta area, the Bentley Firm notably encompasses a handful of talented civil litigation and local government attorneys who focus their practice on real estate, complex business litigation, land use, eminent domain and condemnation, aviation, insurance defense, as well as criminal prosecution and defense. In 2012, he was part of a legal team that was responsible for the County's largest courtroom verdict in the State of Georgia ($75,000,000.00).
Practicing at Bentley, Bentley and Bentley for the first three years of his career, Mr. Bentley subsequently relocated to New Orleans, where he became an associate at Phelps, Dunbar, Marks, Claverie and Sims working in insurance defense, commercial litigation and education law. He promptly contributed for another year with the Permian Corporation as an in-house counsel in Houston before returning to The Bentley Firm in 1987, where he has since remained. In 1992 he established the first in-house law department for Cobb County, Georgia, where he served from 1990-1992. During his illustrious legal career in Georgia, Mr. Bentley also served as an active attorney for Cobb County, Georgia, an attorney for the City of Kennesaw and the founding City attorney of Sandy Springs. Additionally, he taught at Kennesaw State University, was a faculty member at Phillips Junior College and was a co-founder and served on the holding company board of the Georgian Bank.
Among his civic activities, Mr. Bentley was the attaché for for the Gambia National Olympic Committee during the Centennial Olympic Games held in Atlanta, Georgia, and was named by the Nation of The Gambia as Honorary Counsel General for the Nation. He assisted in the formation of the Southern Museum in Kennesaw, Georgia and its affiliation with the Smithsonian Institution. Mr. Bentley was active as the Board Member of the Cobb-Marietta Museum of Art and assisted with the Cobb County Prayer Breakfast. Mr. Bentley served as Chairman of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce and lead in the formation of Project 2020, which founded SAT preparation for students in the Cobb County School System. He was also active on the board of directors of the Tommy Nobis Center and the American Cancer Society, was a trustee of The Cove at Walden, a precinct chairperson for the Marietta Republican Party and a district representative for the Cobb County Republican Party. Furthermore, Mr. Bentley served as a board member for the Mount Paran Christian School and was on the boards of the Georgia Ballet, the Cobb County Schools Foundation and several other nonprofit organizations. Likewise, he attends Faith Community Church in Woodstock, Georgia.
An alumnus of the University of Georgia, Mr. Bentley was awarded a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting in 1977. He subsequently attended Emory University, where he completed a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1980. Since concluding his academic efforts, Mr. Bentley has been admitted to practice law by the Georgia, Louisiana and Texas Bar Associations, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth and 11th Circuits, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the Supreme Court of the United States, among others.
To remain aware of developments effecting the field, Mr. Bentley has maintained his professional alignment with several pertinent organizations. To wit, he is a member of the Texas, Louisiana and Georgia Bar. Moreover, Mr. Bentley is a former chairperson of the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce, as well as a former member of the Marietta Georgia and New Orleans Rotary Clubs, Phi Delta Phi and the Knights of Columbus.
Recognized in 1973 with a Journal Cup Award by the Atlanta Constitution Newspaper and in 1981 with an Outstanding Young Men of America Award by Jaycees, Mr. Bentley has since received a President's Award from Kennesaw State University and a Heroes and Legends Award from the Kennesaw Museum Foundation. Likewise, he was named as a Georgia Power and Leader to Watch in Cobb County by Atlanta Magazine. A pious adherent of his Christian faith, Mr. Bentley has been married to his wife, Patricia, since 1983. Together, they are the proud parents of three sons and a daughter, through whom they have four grandchildren.
