In more than 60 years as a journalist, Mr. Kirk has focused for much of his career on conflict in Asia and the Middle East.
Beginning in 1961 as a reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times and the New York Post, he later worked for the Washington Star as a correspondent on Asia, the Chicago Tribune as a Far East correspondent and for several other significant publications. Presently, Mr. Kirk is a freelance correspondent with several magazines and newspapers, as well as a contributor for the Daily Beast, Inside Sources and Forbes, where he covers business and economic affairs in North and South Korea.
Mr. Kirk's other roles have included reporting for USA Today, the International Herald Tribune, CBS Radio and the Christian Science Monitor, writing columns for the Korea Times and Future Korea Weekly and articles in the Institutional Investor, the World Tribune, Newsday, the Los Angeles Times, the South China Morning Post, The Providence Journal and countless other publications. Contributing to the discourse on political, economic, social and other relevant issues in newspapers and magazines, Mr. Kirk has notably covered Indonesia in the "Year of Living Dangerously" between 1965 and 1967, the Vietnam War between 1967 and 1974, as well as the wars in Cambodia and Laos. Likewise, he has reported on the nuclear and economic crisis in North Korea since 1972. He has also served as a contributing expert on Korea for several organizations, including Al Jazeera, and for numerous American radio stations in the U.S. and abroad, Mr. Kirk has been a contributing editor for Future Korea Weekly and the Kyoto Journal and has served on the board of the Asia-Pacific Business and Technology Report.
In addition, Mr. Kirk has published a dozen books since 1971, including "Korean Dynasty: Hyundai and Chung Ju Yung" in 1994, "Korean Crisis: Unraveling of the Miracle in the International Monetary Fund Era" in 2000, and "Okinawa and Jeju: Bases of Discontent" in 2013. His most recent book, "Kim Dae Jung and the Quest for the Nobel," was released in 2014 with co-author Kisam Kim. Mr. Kirk has also been an Edward R. Murrow fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, a visiting fellow at Cornell University and a Fulbright researcher in the Philippines and India.
Mr. Kirk attained a Bachelor of Arts at Princeton University in 1959 and a Master of Arts in international relations at the University of Chicago in 1965. He also received an honorary Doctor of Letters from the University of Maryland Global University in 2004. Mr. Kirk is a member of a number of professional organizations, including the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Press Club in Washington, the Overseas Press Club in New York City, the Foreign Correspondents Club in Hong Kong, the Seoul Foreign Correspondents' Club and the International House of Japan, a nonprofit that promotes cultural exchange and intellectual collaboration between Japan and other countries.
Mr. Kirk has had a Ford fellowship at Columbia University and a National Endowment for the Humanities grant at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has also received a Page One Award from the Chicago Newspaper Guild, three Overseas Press Club citations and an OPC Award for Asia reporting, as well as a George Polk Memorial Award for Foreign Reporting for articles on Vietnam and Cambodia. He has been featured in over 70 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Media and Communication and Who's Who in the World.
