HONOLULU, HI, August 27, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gary W. Bowersox has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Mr. Bowersox is a gemologist, explorer and entrepreneur with more than five decades in the international gem and mineral trade. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Western Michigan University, and had begun graduate coursework at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, when he joined the United States Army in 1964. Mr. Bowersox would serve until 1969, advancing to the rank of a major and spending two years as the chief of operations of the United States Army Audit Agency Pacific before his honorable discharge.
Following his army service, Mr. Bowersox began what would become his life's work: exploring mineral-rich areas in Afghanistan and Central Asia, where he would forge valuable professional relationships with local tribal authorities, and specializing in the export, processing, and sale of high-quality gemstones. From 1969 until 1971, he operated as the president of Bowersox, Dohrmann & Co., establishing GeoVision, Inc. in 1970 and Gem Hunters Corporation in 2004. Through Gem Hunters Corporation, Mr. Bowersox has sourced gemstones from Afghanistan, Brazil and many other mining economies including Sri Lanka and imported them to the United States for sale for more than five decades, gaining a reputation as one of the world's foremost experts on the Afghan gemstone trade.
Mr. Bowersox' work has brought him into consultative roles with major corporations and NGOs including Development Alternatives International, the United States Agency for International Development and the World Bank, among others. He has written two books, "Gemstones of Afghanistan," and "The Gem Hunter: True Adventures of an American in Afghanistan," and chaired more than eight symposia on Central Asian gem and mineral industries, most recently the 2014 Sinkankas Symposium, highlighting topics in the mineralogy and gemology of rubies. In 2002, Mr. Bowersox was the subject of "The Gem Hunter in Afghanistan," a 50-minute documentary film about his life and work in the gem mines of Central Asia.
Mr. Bowersox has provided over 1,000 lectures and appeared on over 500 television and radio shows on local, national and international stations.
Mr. Bowersox attributes his success to a love for his work and a respect for the people he works with at all levels of the supply chain, striving to treat each associate like a part of his family. Since 1995, he has brought his globetrotting expertise to the Hawaii chapter of the National Explorer's Club, where he serves as the chairperson of the board, and he remains active in the local Vietnam Veterans Association.
