Dr. Tang became interested in pursuing music as a career in high school. He was accepted to the newly-formed music department of the Chung Chi College, the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1965. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969, becoming the first ever locally trained music major in the entire history of Hong Kong. Continuing his education in the United States, he earned a Master of Sacred Music degree from Wittenberg University in Ohio in 1971, and a Master of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music in 1973. Dr. Tang concluded his academic efforts with a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Utah in 1979. He has studied composition with Kalervo Tuukkanen, Jan Bender, Heinz Werner Zimmermann, Marcel Dick, Ramiro Cortes and Vladimir Ussachevsky. In addition, he studied conducting with Joseph Rosenstock.
From 1978 to 1983, Dr. Tang worked as the music director of the Southwest Missouri State University Orchestra. He subsequently excelled as the associate conductor of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra from 1983 to 1986. Following these appointments, Dr. Tang found success as the music director for the Jackson Symphony Orchestra in Tennessee from 1986 to 2013 and the Paducah Symphony Orchestra in Kentucky from 1986 to 2008. During his tenure of 27 years and 23 years respectively with these two musical organizations, he has built two orchestras to great regional prominence. Repertoire he conducted with these two orchestras have included some sixty complete symphonies (from all Beethoven to Mahler to Panufuik), hundreds of major orchestra works (including Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring") and over a thousand smaller orchestral and pops repertoire, including numerous of Tang's own arrangements/orchestrations. Soloists he has worked with ranged from Angel Romero to The Beach Boys. In addition, Dr. Tang has appeared as guest conductor in concert with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Nashville, Memphis, South Arkansas, Murfreesboro, Meridian, Gainesville Chamber, and Sewanee Summer Music Center Orchestras.
Notably, Dr. Tang is the composer of more than 80 original works, including four symphonies, three string quartets, concerted works for timpani, percussion, violin and cello, large orchestra works, instrumental and ensemble works of various combinations, a Passion, a ballet, as well as keyboard, vocal and choral works. His compositions have been performed by the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Indianapolis, Atlanta, Utah, Nashville, Charlotte, Memphis, Knoxville, Kansas City, Springfield, Jackson, Paducah, Victoria, Elmira Symphonies, the Rochester Philharmonic, Indianapolis and Gainesville Chamber Orchestras. His works have also been performed in England, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Australia and Hong Kong. Commercially recorded on "Marco Polo" (part of "Naxos") and "Opus One" labels as well as published, he is a recipient of forty ASCAP Awards. He has been invited to the MacDowell Colony and Yaddo. Commissions he received have come from the Utah, Charlotte, Knoxville, Springfield, Jackson Symphonies, Utah's Children Dance Theater, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He was named Tennessee Composer of the Year, and to the honorary titles of Kentucky Colonel and Duke of Paducah. Looking toward the future, Dr. Tang hopes to continue composing, especially in the vein of church music, in which he is currently active.
