Now retired from a commendable career as the Deputy State Geologist and Deputy Commissioner of Mineral Resources, Dr. Charles Roderick Bruce Hobbs, Jr. earned a worthy reputation with the Commonwealth of Virginia's Division of Mineral Resources, for nearly 35 years. Prior to his most recent position, he worked in the capacity of the Assistant State Geologist and Assistant Commissioner of Mineral Resources between 1970 and 1980 and a geologist with the Division from 1957 to 1970. Now as the Division of Geology and Mineral Resources, this group serves as Virginia's official geological survey, that notably performs investigations to reduce risk of environmental hazards and works to support sustainable economic development.
Dr. Hobbs was responsible for successfully assembling a thorough history of various geologic investigations that lead up to and included development of the then Division of Mineral Resources. These surveys were the forerunners of support for geologic. mineral resource, energy, and environmental investigations used for planning and industrial advancement in Virginia between 1835 and 1988. The report was created for the American Association of State Geologists for inclusion in their 1988 publication. ''The State Geological Surveys... A History." This work saw fruition at the behest of the State Geologist of Pennsylvania. Dr. Hobbs likewise had the opportunity to play an instrumental role in working to preserve the Division of Mineral Resources as a departmental unit during a legislative reorganization of state agencies at a time of economic contraction.
Dr. Hobbs originally pursued a degree in chemistry at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. However, at the beginning of his junior year, he pivoted toward the study of geology. After receiving his Bachelor of Science in Geology in 1952, he earned a Master of Science in Geology, in 1954 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1957. He was the first student to receive a doctorate degree in geology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, as well as being the first recipient of such in the Commonwealth of Virginia. His thesis was an extensive study of "Dolomite-bearing Carbonate Rocks of Ordovician Age in Virginia."
In retirement since 1991, Dr. Hobbs has remained active as a member in various working and advisory committees of Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, a retirement community in Charlottesville, Virginia. He is a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geology and an emeritus member of the Geological Society of America.
