Having received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Colorado, a Master of Arts from the University of Colorado and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago, Dr. Schweninger began his career as a history professor at the University of North Carolina. Following his retirement in 2012, he earned the distinguished title of a professor emeritus, having previously served as the Elizabeth Rosenthal Excellence Professor at the university. He was inspired to venture into history education by his mentor, John Hope Franklin, who earned 30 honorary degrees, won many awards throughout his career and co-authored several books with Dr. Schweninger.
As a respected voice in his field, Dr. Schweninger has authored many papers and books relevant to his area of expertise. He has notably earned renown for his expertise in Black American history, race and slavery, western civilizations, urban history and European urban history. His published books include "Runaway Slaves: Rebels on the Plantation," "James T. Rapier and Reconstruction," "From Tennessee Slave to Saint Louis Entrepreneur: The Autobiography of James Thomas" and "Black Property Owner in the South: 1790-1915." For the University of Illinois Press, he wrote "The Southern Debate Over Slavery: Volume 1, Petitions to Southern Legislatures, 1778-1864" and "The Southern Debate Over Slavery: Volume 2, Petition to Southern County Courts, 1775-1867." For the Oxford University Press, Dr. Schweninger wrote "In Search of the Promised Land: A Slave Family in the Old South" and "Appealing for Liberty Freedom Suits in the South," as well as "Families in Crisis in the Old South: Divorce, slavery and the Law" for the University of North Carolina Press.
Civically, Dr. Schweninger has served as the editor and director of the Race and Slavery Petition Project. The result of nearly two decades of work and benefiting from several grants bestowed from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), the Charles Mont Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities, the project was notably established at the University of North Carolina. For his accomplishments throughout his career, Dr. Schweninger was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and chosen for the Los Angeles Times Best Book. He also received the Elliot Rudwick Award, the Best Article Award from South Carolina Historical Magazine, the Research Excellence Award, as well as numerous other awards for his books and articles throughout the years.
