After beginning her medical career as a general physician in internal medicine, Dr. O'Connell pursued the field of breast imaging due to the direct patient contact and teaching opportunities. A world-renowned expert in her field, she is one of the few radiologists in the world with hands-on experience in breast CT imaging. She draws upon 30 years of expertise in breast imaging in her research involving new imaging modalities, including cone beam CT of the breast contrast 3D imaging. Cone Beam CT imaging provides pictures of tissue around the ribs and outer breast towards the armpit, where 50 percent of cancers are found. With 360-degree views of breast anatomy, the Cone Beam CT scanner has detected every tumor discovered on a mammogram.
In light of her vast breadth of knowledge, Dr. O'Connell holds a number of academic and executive positions, including as the section chief of breast imaging and professor of imaging sciences for the University of Rochester and a clinical teaching faculty member for diagnostic medical sonography at the Rochester Institute of Technology. With the aforementioned university's Medical Center, she also excels as an attending radiologist and the director of women's imaging. Over the years, Dr. O'Connell has gained valuable expertise in radiology and education as an attending radiologist with Rochester General Hospital, Saint Mary's Hospital and Highland Hospital, an executive with Rochester Radiology Associates, the Genesee Radiological Group and Northside Radiology, and a clinical assistant professor and an associate professor of imaging sciences at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.
Before pursuing a career in medicine, Dr. O'Connell obtained a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and a Bachelor in the Art of Obstetrics from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland in 1973. She subsequently earned a Doctor of Medicine and completed fellowships through the American College of Radiology, the Society of Breast Imaging and the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, she is affiliated with the Rochester Roentgen Ray Society, the American Roentgen Ray Society, the American Institute of Ultrasound and Medicine and the Radiological Society of North America. Dr. O'Connell is a fellow of the American College of Radiology, the Society of Breast Imaging, and the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. Devoted to her community, Dr. O'Connell contributes to those in need as a member of the board of directors for the Breast Cancer Coalition in Rochester.
An expert in her field, Dr. O'Connell has authored a number of works, including "Your Child and X-Rays," "Newer Technologies in Breast Cancer Imaging: Dedicated Cone-Bram Breast Computed Tomography," "Dedicated Breast CT: Feasibility for Monitoring Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy Treatment" and the chapter 'Mammography and Breast Cancer Screen' in "The Little Book of Menopause: Living with the Challenges of Breast Cancer." Since the mid-2000s and early 2010s, she has provided her expertise to the American Journal of Roentgenology and the Journal of Clinical Imaging Sciences as a reviewer. Throughout her career, she has been honored on several occasions, accepting a Gold Medal from the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Arvin Robertson Award, the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and a feature in Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
