With more than 45 years of professional experience, Mr. Metzler is a full-time volunteer with the United States National Park Service since 2007. Prior to obtaining his current role, he was the owner of Eric H. Metzler Research Associates, and he is an Ambassador of National Resources for the State of Ohio. Earlier in his career, he was the deputy chief of ODNR Division of Watercraft.
Mr. Metzler first pursued an education with Michigan State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1968. He served as a Research Associate with a number of institutions relevant to his field. To wit, Mr. Metzler contributed his services to the Ohio Agricultural Research Center, the Ohio Biological Survey, the Florida State Collection of Arthropods, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. He is a Research Associate with the U.S. National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian), the Museum of Southwestern Biology, McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity, and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Mr. Metzler has been affiliated with several professional organizations and societies. He is a member of The Ohio Lepidopterists, The Lepidopterists Society, the Societas Europaea Lepidopterologica, La Sociedad Hispano-Laso-Americana de Lepidopterologia, Native Plant Society of New Mexico, the Entomological Society of America, the Southwestern Entomological Society, Sierra Club, and New Mexico Wilderness Society. He is active with the Wedge Entomological Research Foundation. He was active with the Columbus Natural History Society, and he was a trustee of the Midwest Biodiversity Institute. Further, Mr. Metzler served as a science advisor for Prairie Biotic Research, Inc. and an officer for the Ohio Parks and Recreations Association.
Throughout his career, Mr. Metzler has been recognized for his contributions. He described 26 species of moths, new to science. He authored 55 peer reviewed scientific papers and four books on moths in North America. The recipient of the Cornett Award for Contributions to Lepidopterology from the University of Louisville, he was recognized for 11,000 hours of volunteer service by the National Park Service.
