Having accrued years of expertise in a management capacity, Mr. Lau excels as a process safety management coordinator with Par Hawaii Refining, a subsidiary of Par Pacific Holdings Inc. He is a motivated leader that channels his energy into inspiring others by establishing trusting professional relationships. As a coordinator, he oversees the management, coordination and implementation of process safety management system principles, processes and procedures for Par Hawaii Refining facilities. For the past two decades, Mr. Lau has also served as a coach for the Varsity Boys Soccer team at Kapolei High School, where he focuses on player development through the four pillars of soccer: technical, tactical, physical and psychological.
Before joining Par Hawaii Refining, Mr. Lau gained valuable expertise in the field in the same position at Tesoro Corporation in the Health and Safety Department, where he previously served as a T.O.P. coordinator for the Health and Safety Department and plant operator of the Operations Department. With Tesoro, the scope of his duties ranged from coordinating and facilitating various programs, including the Triangle of Prevention Investigation Methodology Program and OSHA programs, to planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and evaluating the T.O.P. Safety Program – a systems approach to health and safety that focuses on an incident investigation model to seek out and address unsafe working conditions. Prior to embarking on his current path, Mr. Lau worked as a teacher for Kapolei Middle School from 2000 until 2006 and as an associate engineer for Computer Systems Engineering during the late-1990s.
An expert in his field, Mr. Lau pursued pre-medical studies at Saint Mary's College of California and San Diego State University as a student-athlete while playing for their respective Division 1 Men's Soccer Teams. He later attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa while playing semi-professional soccer for the Hawaii Tsunami of the United Soccer League (formerly USISL) from 1995 to 1997 and subsequently completed a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology degree at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1998.
Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Lau has also obtained numerous certifications and licenses, including a post-baccalaureate teacher certification in secondary education and teaching science, a certification as a curriculum specialist in forensic science, a Nike SPARQ training certification, a license to teach in the State of Hawaii, and certifications in environmental management systems and process safety management, which he earned through the OSHA Academy.
In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Mr. Lau aligns himself with the Western State Petroleum Association, the American Society of Safety Professionals, the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers and United Soccer Coaches. Due to his coaching expertise, he was named as the NSCAA High School Boys Large Schools Regional Coach of the Year and received the High School State Coach of the Year Award through United Soccer Coaches in 2019. Looking toward the future, Mr. Lau aims to help Par Hawaii Refining prosper and either obtain a directorial role or provide risk management consulting services.
