After earning an Associate of Arts from Miami Dade College and a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in finance and international business from Florida International University. He had originally planned to enroll in medical school at the University of Texas, but after his father passed, he could no longer afford to do so and choose instead to support his mother and family while working his way through school. Ultimately, Mr. Muñoz decided to enter the banking industry enabling him to continue providing for his family and helping others.
Mr. Muñoz began his career as a loan officer at Continental of Illinois National Bank and Trust Company of Chicago and over the course of his 40 year banking career has held executive positions in marketing and finance with Synovus Bank, BBVA, Professional Bank, Marquis Bank, Regions Bank, Israel Discount Bank, Mizuho Bank and Barclay's Capital PLC. Currently, Mr. Muñoz excels as the president of the Miami market for commercial banking and wealth management at First Horizon Bank, a post in which he delivers commercial banking and wealth management solutions to domestic and international customers in the Miami region and leads a high-performing sales team that consistently surpasses institutional goals. In addition, Mr. Muñoz also created a 13-member advisory board of community leaders and established a bank branch concept serving as a model to anchor consumer and retail business known as a city center, while obtaining double digit growth for the company and simultaneously serving as a leader for numerous not-for-profit organizations in Miami.
As a dedicated financial professional, Mr. Muñoz has facilitated more than $28 billion worth of economic activity throughout Florida, the Caribbean, Central America and South America in the areas of commercial banking, large corporate and middle market lending, public, institutional and specialty lending including global wealth and treasury management services.
In recognition of his exemplary efforts throughout his career, Mr. Muñoz was most recently named the "Banker of the Year" by the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in 2020 and presented with the "2020 Champion Conservation" award from the Zoo Miami Foundation. He also received the NASBITE 2020 International award for "Advancing International Trade in the State of Florida" and in 2020 was named a "Kentucky Colonel" by the Governor of Kentucky, Hon. Andy Beshear. In 2019, he received the "Lifetime Achievement" award and was inducted into the "Second Century Society" by the South Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America as well as being honored with the "Public Service and Capital of Industry in Global Trade and Banking" award from the Corporate Strategists Corporation, and the 2019 "Diamond Circle" award for Leadership and Management from First Horizon Bank. In addition, he was also honored as "The Achiever" in 2020 and 2014 by the Miami Today newspaper on two occasions and inducted into the "Alumni Hall of Fame" at Miami Dade College.
He also received the "Alumni Torch" award from Florida International University and named "Philanthropist of the Year", the "Corporate Philanthropist of the Year" and the "Man of the Year" from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of South Florida on separate occasions. In 2015, he was named "Florida Business Ambassador" by the Governor of Florida, Hon. Rick Scott and in 1994 was named founding member of the Florida Film and Television Investment Board by the Governor of Florida, Hon. Lawton Chiles.
As a dedicated and passionate member of his community, Mr. Muñoz serves as chair of the World Trade Center Miami, president-elect of the South Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America, first vice chair of the Executive Board of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and secretary of the Executive Board of the Miami-Dade Beacon Council. Mr. Munoz is also actively involved with the Florida International Bankers Association where he is a former president and chair, the Center for Financial Training International, the Center for Leadership at Florida International University, the Tibor and Sheila Hollo School of Real Estate at Florida International University and Board member of the Florida Alternative Investment Association. Throughout his career, he has attributed his professional success to caring about his family, serving as a mentor and placing God first in his daily activities.
