Born in Buenos Aires, Mr. Perez recalls his father being in and out of jail throughout most of his childhood. His mother encouraged the younger man to pursue his two passions: art and sports. A gifted martial artist, Mr. Perez found himself drawn primarily to karate, despite his teachers' early recognition and support of his artistic talent. He credits his karate teacher, Oscar Higa, with encouraging him to pursue painting on a deeper level, and eventually to make the leap into painting professionally.
After losing both parents in his teenage years, Mr. Perez traveled the world, spending time in Italy, Japan and Brazil teaching martial arts and submitting his work to galleries and contests. Drawing on his childhood memories of Argentina, the discipline ingrained within him during his study of karate, and the energy of post-impressionist painting techniques, Mr. Perez developed a style that he dubbed "neo-emotionalism." Gestural, evocative, poetic, and loaded, he describes his work as speaking to the viewer on an innate, universal level.
Mr. Perez is prolifically active in charitable initiatives, and has donated work for auctions to benefit Saint Jude's, the Leo Messi Foundation, After School Programs with Arnold Schwarzenegger, American Icon Award 2019, Pancreatic Cancer, Woman Cancer, and Los Angeles-area community organizations, which include extracurricular school programs and an autism research nonprofit.
