Having celebrated 40 years as a member of the faculty of Binghamton University, Dr. Straight earned the distinguished title of a professor emeritus of anthropology and linguistics in 2010, following his retirement from the field. In addition to teaching, he became the associate vice president and vice provost for undergraduate education and international affairs, as an associate dean for academic affairs, as the director of the graduate studies in anthropology, and as the director of the linguistics program. Additionally, he was the founding director of the university's Languages Across the Curriculum program within the undergraduate curriculum. Specializing in psycholinguistics, which is the study of the relationships between linguistic behavior and psychological processes, Dr. Straight notably studied such languages as French, German, Japanese, Yucatec Maya, Spanish and Romanian.
Some of Dr. Straight's other noteworthy roles included appointments with the U.S. Department of Education as a project director in several capacities, with the American Council on Education as a senior research associate, and with the University of Bucharest as a Fulbright lecturer in psycholinguistics. He has also written extensively. Dr. Straight is the author of the 1976 book "The Acquisition of Maya Phonology," and has since contributed chapters in several other books, as well as scholarly articles and reviews in professional journals.
After retiring from Binghamton University, Dr. Straight became a Fulbright program advisor in the Office of External Scholarships, Fellowships and Grants. He also mentored academic faculty in Myanmar, Asia, through the Institute of International Education's Connecting with the World: International Relations at Higher Education Institutions program.
Throughout his career, he was aligned with several prominent professional organizations relative to work, including the American Anthropological Association, the Linguistic Society of America, the Association of International Education Administrators and the Linguistic Association of Canada and the United States. In retirement, Dr. Straight remains active as a member of the Cultures and Languages Across the Curriculum Consortium, the Association of International Education Administrators, and the Linguistic Association of Canada and the United States and is currently the president of the Binghamton University Retirees Club.
Dr. Straight pursued an education at the University of Michigan with the assistance of a national merit scholarship, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in English language and literature in 1965. He then completed both a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in linguistics at the University of Chicago in 1970 and 1972, respectively. During his graduate studies, Dr. Straight received a doctoral dissertation improvement grant from the National Science Foundation and a research fellowship between 1968 and 1970.
Dr. Straight received a Foundation Award from the Binghamton University Council and Foundation in 2009, the Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in International Education from the Institute of International Education to the State University of New York (SUNY) in 2007. Likewise, he was bestowed with the University and Chancellors Award for Excellence in Teaching from Binghamton University for the years of 1995 and 1996. Dr. Straight also received an Excellence Award from the New York State/United University Professions for outstanding performance and superior service to SUNY and to the state of New York in 1990.
