He previously excelled in a number of capacities at Fairleigh Dickinson University between 1965 and 2002, including as a professor and communications consultant. Prior to this appointment, he worked at the University of Iowa as an instructor from 1962 to 1965. Dr. Cummins began his career as an editor and a trainee in advertising and sales for the General Electric Company in Schenectady, New York, from 1957 until 1959.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Cummins pursued an education at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1957. He continued his academic efforts with a Master of Arts at the University of Iowa in 1962. In addition to this accomplishment, he obtained a Master of Fine Arts at the aforementioned university later in the same year. Dr. Cummins concluded his studies at the University of Iowa in 1965, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy.
Beyond his primary responsibilities in the field, Dr. Cummins has participated in numerous endeavors within his professional circles. Between 1959 and 1965, he completed service in the United States National Guard. Dr. Cummins remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise, including the College English Association, the National Council of Teachers of English and the American Association of University Professors, for which he held the position of a chapter president from 1974 to 1976.
Dr. Cummins has found success with his written works as well, authoring "Witness" in 1975, "Where We Live" in 1983, "Local Music" in 2007, "The End of the Circle," "Habitat: Stories of Bent Realism" in 2013 and "Telling Stories: Old & New" in 2015, among other story collections and essays. Having penned short-form content for journals as well, he is noted as the co-author of "Our Literary Travels" in 2020, "Programming Our Lives: Television and the American Identity" in 2006, "The Literary Traveler" in 2005 and "Managing Management Climate" in 1972. He was additionally active as the editor for "Shifting Borders: East European Poetries of the Eighties" in 1993. Dr. Cummins further provided his wealth of knowledge to the Literary Review as the editor-in-chief from 1983 to 2002 and between 2007 and 2008.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Cummins has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. In 1982, he was presented with the fiction fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Likewise, Dr. Cummins was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the East.
Bearing little interest in a corporate career, Dr. Cummins was drawn to academia due to his inherent enjoyment of writing and the desire to support himself through his collegiate enrollment following his military service. He was also mentored by the likes of R.V. Cassill, George P. Elliot and the faculty at the University of Iowa. He proudly cites the publication of his novels and short stories, garnering his degrees and his impact upon his classrooms among the highlights of his professional ventures.
