A firm endorser of integrity and compassion, Dr. Fikes developed an interest in social inconsistencies and inequalities at an early age. The son of two educators, he believes the foundations for his professional ventures were ingrained into his constitution through their guidance as well as the time period during which he was raised. The late 1960s were a time of civil unrest which compelled him to pursue a career in ethnic studies and anthropology.
Dr. Fikes enrolled at the University of California Irvine and earned a Bachelor of Arts in comparative culture in 1973. In 1974, he obtained a Master of Education in bilingual education at the University of San Diego. Dr. Fikes continued his studies at the University of Michigan, from where he graduated with a Master of Arts in anthropology in 1977 and a Doctor of Philosophy in anthropology in 1985.
Dr. Fikes utilized his analytic skills to manage effectively the responsibilities of multiple positions throughout his career. From 1985 to 1987, he educated students in social research methodology at Marmara University in Istanbul, Turkey. From 1999 to 2016 he served as a Professor of Social Anthropology at Yeditepe University in Istanbul, where he taught classes in applied anthropology, conflict resolution, leadership and comparative religion. Additionally, Dr. Fikes was an expert witness for a defendant who won his religious freedom case in the U.S. Supreme Court and an interviewee featured in three documentary films and numerous radio shows concerning the problems caused by inaccurate depictions of marginalized cultures, particularly Native Americans. He is the author or editor of numerous publications, five books and a documentary film. Since 2014, Jay Fikes has been the president of Soils Organic Solution Incorporated, a Texas-based corporation with real estate in three states.
Dr. Fikes has accepted numerous commendations throughout his career. From 1976 to 1979, the University of Michigan appointed him as a teaching fellow of anthropology. In 1981-82 he was awarded a doctoral dissertation grant through Rackham Graduate School and the anthropology department at the University of Michigan. Likewise, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. funded his research as a postdoctoral fellow in 1988, 1991-92 and 1995.
Dr. Fikes's contribution to passing federal legislation to preserve the religious freedom of the Native American Church continues to resonate with him as a highlight of his professional pursuits. For his efforts, he was notably honored with the Certificate of Recognition for Lobbying for Federal Legislation for the Native American Church. Dr. Fikes is delegating his business responsibilities in order to publish a book, Beyond Peyote: Kieri and the Huichol Deer Shaman, based on 44 years of research in Mexico with elderly Huichol shamans.
