Mr. Tyson is a statewide elected judge. sitting on the North Carolina Court of Appeals in Raleigh. Serving on that court since 2015, he formerly was elected and served in the same capacity from 2001 until 2009. Mr. Tyson's long and successful legal career includes being appointed by the Governor of North Carolina as Chairman of the North Carolina State Ethics Commission. Between 2009 until 2013, he served as a Recall Court of Appeals Judge and as a Special Superior Court Judge.
Active as a successful attorney of more than 20 years, Mr. Tyson maintained his own practice as founder of Tyson & Associates in Fayetteville. Focusing his practice on landlord-tenant, land use and real property law, he also handled matters of civil litigation and criminal defense. Mr. Tyson was also a partner at several other firms prior to establishing his firm. He served as the senior vice president of development for the Blockbuster Entertainment Group in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and spent for over a decade representing several other retail organizations as corporate counsel and in real estate development. Prior to law school, Judge Tyson worked as probation and parole officer for the North Carolina Department of Corrections and as a public-school teacher during the mid-1970s.
Outside of his full-time commitments in the courtroom, Mr. Tyson has taught as a professor of law at Campbell University since 1987. His history with the university notably includes being election as President of the national alumni assication, being honored as a Distinguished Alumnus, and working as a faculty research assistant in the school of law. Mr. Tyson also lectured the University of North Carolina at Wilmington's Cameron School of Business between 1984 and 1988 and as a presenter with the North Carolina Bar Association's continuing legal education program from 1992 to 2010. A frequent continuing legal education presenter, he has contributed multiple articles to various law journals throughout his career. Among his works, Mr. Tyson published, "Drafting, Interpreting and Enforcing Commercial and Shopping Center Leases" in Campbell Law Review 1992, "Presumed Guilty until Proven Innocent" in St. Thomas Law Review 1998, and "Morals, Ethics, and Law, What Commonalities Remain?" Essay in Liberty Law Review in 2019.
Mr. Tyson has a distinguished record of leadership within his community. A former chairman of the Cumberland County Joint Planning and Zoning Board and the Cumberland Soil and Water Conservation District, he also served on the North Carolina Property Tax Commission. Other commitments to Mr. Tyson's credit have included activity on the board of visitors of Campbell University Law School, where he received his law degree, and as a current Commissioner on the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission.
Mr. Tyson was commissioned as a captain, rising to the rank of colonel and staff judge advocate for the North Carolina State Defense Force between 1987 and 1996. Mr. Tyson also served as colonel and staff judge advocate for the United States Service Command from 1999 to 2004.
Born and raised in Fayetteville, Mr. Tyson graduated from Terry Sanford High School, the son of a six-term state legislator, member of the county commission and chairman of the board. He prepared for his career by earning a Bachelor of Art in English and Secondary Education at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 1974 and a Juris Doctor cum laude, at Campbell University in 1979 as a member of the Charter Class of the School of Law. He also completed postgraduate coursework at the University of Notre Dame School of Law and the London School of Economics and Political Sciences in 1977. Continuing his education several years later, Mr. Tyson earned a Master of Business Administration at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business in 1988.
Admitted to practice law by the North Carolina and Virginia State Bars, Mr. Tyson has also been admitted by the U.S. District Court of the Western and Eastern Districts of North Carolina, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States. He is the only active Judge who is a board-certified specialist for real property law, business, commercial, and industrial transactions in the state of North Carolina, certified since 2001 by the North Carolina State Bar Board of Legal Specialization. To support his incredible career, Mr. Tyson has been active with several professionally-related organizations, including the North Carolina Bar Association and the American Bar Association. Moreover, he has been involved with several other professional organizations, such as the International Council of Shopping Centers, and the American Arbitration Association, where he has been a member of the organization's National Panel of Arbitrators since 1992.
To recognize his professional achievements, Mr. Tyson was named among the Outstanding Young Men of America in 1987 and as an Outstanding Law Professor by the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University in 1989. Among other accolades, he received the James E. Cross Jr. Leadership Award from the North Carolina State Bar and the Centennial Award for Outstanding and Exemplary Community Service from the North Carolina Bar Association in 2013. More recently, Judge Tyson was honored as a North Carolina Leader of the Law for 2019. Judge Tyson is also a peer-reviewed AV-rated attorney through Martindale-Hubbell since 2009.
