Drawn to an exciting and exotic field, Dr. Jeevanandam wanted to take on the challenge of becoming a surgeon and studying cardiology. He lived in India until he was 10 years old, and he and his family immigrated to the United States. He attended Columbia University at the age of 15 and graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry at 19 years old. He then received a Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University's Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1984 and went on to complete a residency and several fellowships at the NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Jeevanandam moved on to Temple University to become the Director of the Heart Transplant program in 1992. Under his direction, the program performed 52 heart transplants that year, exceeding the hospital's previous record, and then became one of the largest transplant programs in the world. He then joined the staff at University of Chicago Medicine in 1998, where he currently serves as Director of the Heart & Vascular Center, Cynthia Chow Professor of Surgery and Chief of Cardiac Surgery.
Dr. Jeevanandam is recognized throughout the field as a pioneering cardiac surgeon with countless accolades, publications and industry records and firsts to his credit. Early on in his career, Dr. Jeevanandam performed the first successful adult heart transplant using an undersized pediatric donor. Most recently, in December 2018, he supervised a surgical team that performed the world's first triple-organ transplants on two patients with multiple organ failure. Since then, the teams at University of Chicago Medicine have performed four more triple-organ transplants. Out of 23 such transplants reported in the history of the world, The Chicago team has performed 10.
Throughout his prolific career, Dr. Jeevanandam has performed more than 1,400 heart transplants, including the total artificial heart, and he has performed numerous complex cardiac surgery procedures. He often focuses on patients who have been deemed inoperable, giving them a second chance of life. Specifically, Dr. Jeevanandam has demonstrated his skill in bloodless cardiac surgery, which minimizes blood loss during surgical procedures and spares patients' needs for blood transfusions.
Civically, Dr. Jeevanandam continuously gives back to underserved communities and countries with his renowned medical skills. He developed high risk and cardiac assist programs in China, India, the Middle East and South America. In addition, he and his family established a fund to help children in India attend college. The fund currently supports 27 students to finish their 3 years of college.. For the past 24 years, Dr. Jeevanandam has also made annual visits to Puttaparthi, India to perform volunteer surgeries. Among his countless professional accolades, Dr. Jeevanandam has been recently presented with the Chamberlain Award and the Whipple Award. He was also recognized by Castle Connelly as Top Doctor and as Cynthia Chow Professor of Surgery.
Throughout his career, Dr. Jeevanandam has attributed his success to his many mentors, his parents, his faith and his exceptional team at University of Chicago Medicine. Dr. Jeevanandam has always strived to be a compassionate and caring surgeon for all of his patients. He has gone through his career with a focus on innovation and making lasting contributions to society.
Dr. Jeevanandam maintains professional affiliation with the American Heart Association, the American College of Surgeons, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, and the American Society for Artificial Organs. Looking toward the future, Dr. Jeevanandam plans to continue his innovative work in the heart program, while also spreading the success to people who have helped in cardiac and vascular surgery. He would also like to develop a cardiovascular center and create a new health care model that would be beneficial to patients. Dr. Jeevanandam also hopes to mentor and teach young people in the field in order to pass on his experiences and foster even more innovation with new technologies.
