Dr. MacKinnon is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and educator with more than 20 years of excellence as a member of the faculty/staff at Rochester University. Drawn toward working with others in a psychology practice, he completed both a Bachelor of Science in religious education from Rochester University and a Bachelor of Science in human resources development from Oakland University in 1981. From 1993 until 1994, Dr. MacKinnon completed a clinical internship and residency in psychology at the Wyandotte Hospital and Medical Center, where he would go on to work with adolescents in the center's psychiatric partial hospitalization program. He was bestowed a Doctor of Philosophy in clinical psychology from the University of Detroit-Mercy in 1997, with a dissertation on the effects of stress response to natural disaster films as a function of patient locus of control and field dependence/field independence. Dr. MacKinnon began his private clinical practice in 1997 as a practitioner at MacKinnon and associates and, in 2000, returned to the School of Natural and Behavioral Sciences at the Rochester University as a professor of psychology.
Dr. MacKinnon maintains his clinical practice, and has been named as one of the Top Psychologists (2020) in the Detroit Area for his work. In addition to professorial duties at Rochester University, teaching more than 15 courses in diverse topics in psychology, media, and ethics, he served as the chairperson of the department of psychology until 2020 and currently is the clinical director of the Psychology and Counseling Center where he was presented with a Distinguished Faculty of the Year award in 2014. A prolific author, Dr. MacKinnon has been published in such professional journals as the Oxford University Forum on Public Policy, the Michigan Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology Newsletter, the Journal of Health and Human Experience, the Social History of the American Family: An Encyclopedia, and Historical Monuments: History, Culture, Heritage, and Beyond. Moreover, he has presented for several patient groups at the William Beaumont Hospital, in continuing education lectures at Rochester University, and at the Weisberg Cancer Center.
Dr. MacKinnon's research interests focus on the effects of medical and catastrophic trauma on stress and patient-caregiver relationships, particularly cancer patients. His teaching has included work on modeling the psychology of media phenomenon in horror and speculative fiction. As an advocate for his profession and for ensuring equity in access to behavioral health services, he has volunteered for Beaumont Hospital in their cancer support groups and serves as the vice president of the Academy for the Psychoanalytic Arts. He attributes his success to a strong ethical focus in his life and work, and toward maintaining a genuine passion for others' stories and struggles, and looks forward to continuing his clinical practice for as long as he is able. Looking to the future, Dr. MacKinnon hopes to step away from academia and balance his work with patients with more private consulting.
