HERSHEY, PA, September 11, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present M. Elaine Eyster, MD with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Eyster celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Although she initially aspired to become a chemist, Dr. Eyster decided a career in medicine would allow her to leverage her talents as a people person instead of being confined to a laboratory. She received a Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Medicine from Duke University, and completed an internship and residency at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical School (now New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center). Dr. Eyster subsequently found success as a fellow in hematology at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical College, where she eventually advanced to become an assistant professor of medicine.
Dr. Eyster further distinguished herself at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center of The Pennsylvania State University as an assistant, associate and full professor of medicine where she took on the role of the chief of the hematology division in the department of medicine at Pennsylvania State University, excelled as the medical director of the Special Hematology Laboratory at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and director of the Hemophilia Center of Central Pennsylvania. Today, Dr. Eyster serves in these positions.
Dr. Eyster is well known for her research on transfusion associated HIV and Hepatitis C virus infections in persons with hemophilia. Earlier in her career, she distinguished herself as the director of the AIDS Clinical Trials at Penn State Hershey. During this time she was active in various roles with the Pennsylvania State Hemophilia Advisory Committee, the FDA Blood Products Advisory Committee, the Multiagency Task Force on AIDS of the Department of Health and Human Services, the NIAID/NIH Clinical Trials Group, the Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee of the National Hemophilia Foundation, and the NCI Multicenter Hemophilia Cohort Study Group. For her accomplishments throughout her career, Dr. Eyster was bestowed with the Duke Distinguished Medical Alumna Award in 2011, the Pennsylvania Medical Society Distinguished Service Award in 2015, the Penn State Honorary Alumni Award in 2018 and the peer-nominated Hemostasis and Thrombosis Research Society Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019.
As an accomplished medical professional, Dr. Eyster has attributed her success to her parents and her late husband, Dr. Robert E. Dye, who encouraged her throughout her journey. Throughout her prolific career, her most rewarding work was working with hemophilia patients during the HIV epidemic. Her team faced many difficult tasks with her longtime colleague, Dr. James Goedert at the NCI during this time. Dr. Eyster is proud that surviving patients from this period remain healthy and stable 40 years later.
To remain aware of developments affecting her area of expertise, Dr. Eyster maintains her professional affiliation with a number of pertinent organizations. To wit, she is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a member of the American Federation of Clinical Research, the World Federation of Hemophilia, the American Society of Hematology, and the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, among many others. Outside of her vocational circles, Dr. Eyster enjoys such diversions as cooking and playing golf.
