Having accrued more than six decades of inimitable experience in her chosen field, Ms. Holmberg has garnered a laudable reputation as a musician and educator. Following her graduation from college, she acquired a position teaching piano and music history at Gulf Park College in Gulfport, Mississippi, in 1955, and later became the choir director of the Arapahoe County Public Schools in Littleton, Colorado in 1958. Although she only taught for the district for two years, Ms. Holmberg continued teaching piano privately in Boulder for her entire career, until 2020.
Outside of her commitments as a teacher, Ms. Holmberg was a pianist who played with several different musical groups in Boulder and Denver since 1953. She not only played music, but also often composed it in preparation for the events she played for, including concerts and other significant occasions. Well-versed in both classical and jazz music, Ms. Holmberg enjoyed playing both genres when she had the opportunity. During the early stages of her career, she accompanied singers at Mario's Restaurant in Denver and Rommolo's, an Italian restaurant that had a quartet of singers every night for entertainment that sang operatic selections, show tunes and more.
Among her compositions is 'The Water Suite', a concerto for glass harp, piano and orchestra, written at the request of her brother, Jamey Turner, who is a glass harp player. Another is "The Church Cantata", written for the 100th Anniversary of the First Presbyterian Church in Boulder, CO. Five of her fourteen 'Boulder Rags' (written for piano) notably attained first place in the jazz/ragtime category competition which was sponsored by Sheet Music Plus, Composers Inc. and the Walnut Creek CA Steinway Piano Company in 2016.
Ms. Holmberg has contributed numerous other choral, piano, and instrumental works over the years, as well as arrangements of orchestral scores for five pianos. She recorded eight CDs, including "Boulder Rags," "Christmas in the Rockies," and "Jazz Images," and authored a book, "How to Practice the Piano." Ms. Holmberg is presently working on her second book, which will include an in-depth look at music.
Prior to embarking upon her professional journey, Ms. Holmberg attended the University of Colorado, where she earned both a Bachelor of Music Education in 1955 and a Master of Music in piano performance in 1958. Her inspiration to study music was partly borne from her recognizable talents in the field, combined with both of her brother's influences, Janey Turner, who was active in the industry, and John who possessed a tremendous voice. She would alo like to recognize the influence of her mother, Elizabeth Turner, who played the piano and violin, and her father, Dr. Carl Turner, who loved to sing in their church choir, as well as in barbershop quartets with friends. There was always music in their home in their small Montana town when they were growing up.
To remain aware of developments in the field, Ms. Holmberg has been a member of several prominent professional organizations, including the Music Teachers' National Association and the American Federation of Musicians. She was also a founding member of the Rocky Mountain Composers in Boulder, Colorado, in 2016. In 1981, Ms. Holmberg was the recipient of a Boulder Arts Commission Grant for the composition of a Concerto for Jazz Piano and Concert Band, which was then performed by the Boulder Concert Band.
