ROCHESTER, MN, September 18, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Richard A. DeRemee, MD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Dr. DeRemee is a retired, board-certified pulmonary disease specialist affiliated with the Mayo Clinic celebrating more than 30 years of service to his students, patients and discipline. As a child, his mother idolized their family doctor, and he began to identify strongly with medical professionals and seek guidance from them. A dedicated student, Dr. DeRemee particularly excelled in science, and earned a Bachelor of Arts from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1955 before pursuing both a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota in 1959.
Dr. DeRemee enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1962 and served as an intern at William Beaumont General Hospital. He then served in the Medical Corp for two additional years, advancing to the rank of a captain before receiving an honorable discharge. Following his military service, he would complete an additional residency and fellowship in internal medicine and pulmonary disease at the Mayo Clinic from 1962 until 1966, when he would join the clinic as a full-time consultant clinician. Dr. DeRemee became an associate faculty member at the Mayo Medical School in 1977, rising to a professorship in 1983.
Dr. DeRemee's research has been extensively published, and he has contributed to more than 200 scientific papers throughout his career. His most notable breakthrough was the discovery of trimethoprim as an effective therapy for Wegener's granulomatosis, a rare and severe form of vasculitis, and he was invited to visit Lubeck, Germany, as a Friedrich Wegener Memorial Lecturer in 1992 in commemoration of his findings. Dr. DeRemee retired from both his academic and his clinical practice with Mayo Clinic in 1996.
In addition to his medical career, Dr. DeRemee has maintained a professional creative writing practice for much of his life, and has published seven volumes of essays, poetry, and memoir. His works include "Time and the Mystery of Consciousness," released in 2003, "Poetry: A String of Pearls," published in 2014, and "From Boys to Men: The Summer of '54," which is a recollection of a transformative European hitchhiking trip that he considers to be his greatest creative work. Dr. DeRemee has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades for his career accomplishments, including a Certificate of Achievement for his service to the United States Army, Alumni Awards from Gustavus Adolphus College and the Mayo Clinic, and a Judson Daland Travel Award and Mayo Distinguished Alumni Citation (2013) from the Mayo Foundation, among others. He is a proud member and past president of the Gustavus Adolphus Alumni Association and the Mayo Chapter of Sigma Xi, a prestigious research honor society.
