Hansen with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. While enrolled in college, Mr. Hansen worked summers in his father's brokerage office in his hometown of Hutchinson, KS. There he became familiar with the Minneapolis based company, Cargill, Inc., the largest grain trader in the USA at the time. Upon graduating cum laude from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1958. He intended to pursue a career in banking. Instead, after interviews with Cargill, he accepted a position, retiring 40 years later.
Mr. Hansen began his career with Cargill, Inc., now the largest privately held company in the country, in the commodity marketing division. After several domestic transfers, and becoming the youngest branch manager in the system, he accepted an assignment in Buenos Aries, Argentina as assistant to the President of that subsidiary. Soon after, he was named a Director, and Manager of the Food Products Department. After 4 years, he returned to the U.S. and was named General Manager of the Poultry Processing Division in Delaware. From there, Mr. Hansen founded a branch office in Atlanta for a new division, Cargill Investor Services, Inc. Four years later he was named President of that division, in Chicago, IL. He served in that capacity for 20 years, retiring in 1998. Under his leadership, C.I.S. grew to be one of the leading futures commission merchants and consultants in world, with offices in all global financial centers.
Upon retirement, Mr. Hansen founded a futures and a derivatives consulting firm, Viking Investor Services LLC, in Lake Forest, IL. Hansen attributes his professional success to his wife, Lou Ann, who unconditionally supported him throughout his career and the many transfers involved. He was also supported by the many teams he helped form, giving them full credit for the successes that were achieved. During his years in Chicago, he also served in the following capacities:
Director of the Chicago Board of Trade (1987-90); Chairman, Futures Industry Association (1991-93); Chairman, Futures Industry Association (1994-98).
He was also a Member, Chicago Board of Trade, Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Winnipeg Grain Exchange, Minneapolis Grain Exchange, Kansas City Board of Trade, and the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Mr. Hansen was on the Board of Supervisors of CARE USA, the international relief organization, where he chaired global fundraisers in the financial industry. After retirement, he became a Director of The Guadalupe Center of Immokalee in Florida, dedicated to ending poverty through early childhood education. The Center offers pre-school childcare, and tutoring of K-3 elementary school children by top high school scholars, who are paid by the hour and earn college scholarships. It is a widely acclaimed and successful endeavor.
The Hansen's now live in a retirement community in Naples, FL, called Moorings Park at Grey Oaks. In this community, Hal serves as chairman of the Activity Committee, and Lou Ann is chairman of the Welcome Committee. They both serve as members of the Residents Council.
