CHATSWORTH, GA, September 21, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Trudy Harris Swilling with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Ms. Swilling celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
After receiving a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University in 1964, Ms. Swilling began her over 50-year-long career as a nurse, later obtaining a Master of Science in nursing from the Medical College of Georgia in 1975. Her first year in nursing, she spent at the Eugene Talmadge Memorial Hospital, now called the Augusta University Health Medical Center, in Augusta, Georgia, as a staff nurse. From 1964 to 1970, Ms. Swilling moved to Hamilton Memorial Hospital, now called the Hamilton Medical Center, in Dalton, Georgia, where she went from staff nurse to head nurse, and then to director-in-service.
Ms. Swilling worked at Dalton State College from 1970 to 2003, where she held various positions. She spent 1970 to 1977 as an instructor, 1977 to 1983 as an assistant professor, 1983 to 2003 as an associate professor and 1993 to 2003 as chair of the division of nursing upon her retirement. In 2003, the college granted her the titles of associate professor emerita and chairman emerita. That same year, Ms. Swilling became a board member at the Northwest Georgia Healthcare Partnership.
Previously, Ms. Swilling was on the board of directors for the Murray County Chapter of the American Red Cross, was a board member for the United Way of Northwest Georgia and was a member of the executive committee and a trustee for the Hamilton Health Care System. She was inducted into the Murray County Hall of Fame and received the American Red Cross Badge. She was previously on the member board for Sumach Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She also held membership with the American Heart Association, the Georgia Nurses Association, the Georgia Nursing League and the American Cancer Society.
Ms. Swilling believes there are many things you can teach and convey to your students, but the one thing you cannot teach is caring, and that is the biggest part of a nurse's job. She has the ability to take a student to a nursing home for one day to determine what kind of nurse they are going to be, because they either have the caring component or they do not. Ms. Swilling is proud of her students, and she is proud of becoming the division chair at Dalton State College. She was one of the first female division chairs at the college in academics. Throughout her career, her greatest most influential supporters were her parents, Nelson W. Harris and Oma Lee Baxter Harris.
