Now retired from a tenured faculty appointment at City University of New York's Brooklyn College, Dr. Owen was renowned as a teacher of undergraduate and graduate level courses in the department of psychology for more than 40 successful years. Advancing from the posts of an assistant professor to a professor between 1973 and 1986, he excelled as the aforementioned department's undergraduate deputy chairman between 1991 and 2013. Additionally, Dr. Owen found success for 26 years on the psychology department's Policy and Budget (Appointments) Committee, a position to which he was elected on nine consecutive occasions.
As a seasoned researcher in his field, Dr. Owen focused his studies on human behavior genetics, abnormal psychology, and quantitative psychology. His review in Psychological Bulletin of the 47,XYY anomaly received international attention as did the widely cited XYY and XXY study headed by Dr. Herman Witkin to which Dr. Owen contributed and which appeared in Science. His collaborations with Dr. Thomas Teasdale on adoptees and also on the secular trend in intelligence appearing in Nature, Behavior Genetics, Intelligence, Personality and Individual Differences, among others, also became well known. His collaborations with Dr. Bonnie Berger on the psychological effects of exercise which appeared in the International Journal of Sport Psychology, Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, Sport Psychologist and others are widely cited. He has contributed to multiple scholarly articles on various topics in many other peer reviewed journals including Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, American Journal of Human Genetics, Archives of General Psychiatry, British Medical Journal, International Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, Psychosomatic Medicine.
Dr. Owen initially obtained an associate degree at Joplin Junior College in 1963. Continuing his studies, he earned a bachelor's degree at Kansas State College in 1965. Subsequently, Dr. Owen concluded his academic efforts with a master's degree at the University of Missouri in 1968 and a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Iowa in 1972.
In support of his distinguished career, Dr. Owen has been aligned as a member of the American Psychological Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Behavior Genetics Association and the Psychometric Society. He is also affiliated with Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Owen has been cited in the 65th edition of Who's Who in America.
