After teaching philosophy and working as a health care administrative troubleshooter, Mr. Lewis decided to attend law school. Upon graduating from the University of California Davis' School of Law in 1979, he joined Morrison & Foerster as an associate and, in 1985, a partner. Backed by 40 years of expertise, he excels today as senior counsel and partner of the firm. His practice focuses on a wide range of bankruptcy and insolvency matters, including the representation of lenders, landlords and other parties to executory contracts and assisting clients in the purchase of assets.
Though his practice concentrates on bankruptcy matters, Mr. Lewis specializes in the interplay between bankrupty law and such areas as class actions in bankruptcy proceedings, environmental law, telecommunications, intellectual property and distressed real estate. Outside of his practice, he has gained valuable expertise as a member of the debtor/creditor relations and bankruptcy committee of The State Bar of California, an advisor for the insolvency law committee of the Business Law Section of the California Lawyers Association , a member of the Bar-bench Liaison Committee of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California, and founding member of the Chapter 9 Subcommittee of the American Bar Association 's business bankruptcy committee.
In addition to his Doctor of Jurisprudence, Mr. Lewis ' professional expertise is backed by a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in philosophy from the University of California Santa Barbara. He is admitted to practice through The State Bar of California and the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Eastern, Central and Southern Districts of California, as well as the United States Supreme Court, and the Ninth, Tenth, Seventh, Second and Fifth Circuit United States Courts of Appeal. A champion of his community, he has done substanatila pro bonoa work through Morrison & Foerster, and has dedicated himself to the Association Montessori International of the United States as chairman off and on for over thirty years.
Although his career has been filled with highlights, Mr. Lewis is especially proud of winning a case in the Supreme Court eight to nothing, taking part in such notable cases as In re Downey Financial Corp and Cline v. First Nationwide Mortgage Corp, practicing at Morrison & Foerster since graduating from law school in 1979, and being married to his wife Phyllis for 40 years.
For his professional excellence, Mr. Lewis has been honored many times, earning the Amjur Award from the University of California Davis, an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who's Who, and two features in Who's Who in American Law in 1987 and 1993. Looking forward, Mr. Lewis intends to continue his practice for the foreseeable future.
