NEWPORT NEWS, VA, September 23, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marilyn H. Watkins has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Building a career as a successful teacher over the years, Ms. Watkins' interests gravitated towards physical education during her adolescence. Following the loss of both of her parents, she was inspired by her teachers and coaches during her secondary education to persevere through both academics and athletics. Subsequently, Ms. Watkins earned a partial basketball scholarship to Norfolk State University, from which she graduated, cum laude, with a dual Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education in 1980.
For years, Ms. Watkins excelled as the athletic director for Warwick High School, having garnered a lauded reputation as Newport News' first black woman to serve in this capacity. She diligently performed her responsibilities and forged lasting relationships with her students at Warwick High School as well as students across Newport News Public Schools. Moreover, Ms. Watkins passionately advocated for athletic administrators in Newport News Public Schools to be taken out of the classroom. Due to her perseverance and some unfortunate circumstances, the school board passed this action in December 2007.
Throughout her tenure, Ms. Watkins has been honored with numerous accolades, including the Athletic Director of the Year Award from the Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Administration Association, the Ferguson High School Teacher of the Year Award and the Peninsula District Coach's Award, to name a few. She attributes her success to remaining honest, humble and diplomatic in every professional situation that she has encountered. Recently, Ms. Watkins entered into a well-deserved retirement.
