Pradeep Rohatgi was born and raised in Kanpur, India in a joint family of scientists, medical professionals, educators, freedom fighters and political leaders where he got the motivation for excellence in science and public service. After his early education in Kanpur, Dr. Rohatgi received a Bachelor of Science in metallurgical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, BHU in 1961, followed by a Master of Science and a Doctorate in material science and engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1963 and 1964, respectively. He is married to Dr. Kalpana Rohatgi since 1968 and they have two children, Rajat and Sonali and three grandchildren Milan, Uma and Mira.
After working in US corporate sector for many years and a year as a Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Dr. Rohatgi became a Professor at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India in 1972. Between 1977 and 1986, Dr. Rohatgi served as the founding Director and CEO of two national laboratories, the National Institute of Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Trivandrum and the Advanced Materials and Processes Research Institute, Bhopal, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, in India. He considers setting of these two national laboratories as his most impactful and lasting contributions. Since 1986, he is a Distinguished Professor and Director in the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee (UWM) where he taught hundreds of students and has supervised the research of numerous master and doctorate students, as well as postdoctoral fellows many of whom are now leaders all over the world. During the length of his tenure. Among other accomplishments, he was also responsible for serving as the founder Director the UWM Composites Center, the Foundry, Solidification and Tribology Laboratories, as well as the Center for Advanced Material Manufacture at UWM. He has also been a Ford/Briggs and Stratton Professor and a FEF Key Professor at UWM, and serves as Foundry Education Foundation Key Professor.
Outside of Dr. Rohatgi's commitments in education, he is currently the chief technology officer of Intelligent Composites LLC, a spin off from UW Milwaukee to manufacture cast metal composites to conserve energy and environment. In addition, he had provided consulting services to a large number of companies including Fortune 500 Corporations, World Bank and United Nations through his consulting company Future Science and Technology LLC in the areas of Materials Manufacture, Energy and sustainable development. He is a registered professional engineer in Wisconsin. Involved in his local community, Dr. Rohatgi is a founding member of the Hindu Temple of Milwaukee and has been a member of World Future Society, Milwaukee Ethnic Council, and several community organizations in Milwaukee.
Dr. Rohatgi is considered a world leader and pioneer in the synthesis and processing of cast metal matrix composites. His discovery is listed as a major landmark in the history of metal casting. He has been granted 20 U.S. patents and has published over 400 refereed research papers in engineering and technology policy. In addition he has coauthored or coedited 13 books. His research has been widely cited by other researchers across the world. Among other accomplishments, Dr. Rohatgi has served on numerous national and state governmental committees in the U.S. and in India for Materials, Energy and technology policy for sustainable development. Currently he serves as the Node leader of Materials Manufacturing Node of Department of Energy Remade Institute, a NNMI institute in the U.S. to promote circular economy to reduce embodied energy to conserve the environment.
He has been elected to Fellowships of twelve societies and academies, including TMS, ASM, MRS, ASME, SAE, SME, IIM (India), IOM ( London), Third World Academy of Sciences (Italy), American Association of Advancement of Science ,Wisconsin Academy of Science and National Academy of Inventors. He has received numerous awards for excellence in research from all over the world, including Chalmers Award from TMS, Tribology Award from ASME, World Intellectual Property Award, Awards of Scientific Merit, Hall Heroult and Best Paper Awards from AFS, National Metallurgist, Binani, and Indranil Awards (India), Motor Transport Institute Award (Poland) and IAAM Scientist Award (Sweden).
