Bishop John W. Batts Jr. was born in Rutherford County, TN, to Bishop John W. Batts Sr. (deceased) and Mother Lillie F. Batts. He has three siblings (one sister and three brothers). He graduated from Shelbyville Central High School in 1972 where he was a member of the National Honor Society, the Student Council, DECA, and the Track Team. Bishop Batts attended Motlow State Community College and Middle Tennessee State University.
Bishop Batts married Sheila Lentz Bonner in February of 1974. To this union three children were born: Nakia, Sylvia, and John III (deceased).They have five grandchildren: Jordan, Khi (Chloe), Taylor, Eryn, and Armani. They have one great-grandson, Kreed.
In 1976, Bishop Batts co-founded the Holiness Choir of The Church of God. This gave the young adults of the COG Central District an opportunity to worship and praise God through song as they travelled near and far for approximately eighteen years.
In 1984 Bishop Batts accepted the divine calling to preach and was licensed in 1985.He pastored the Market St. COG, Fayetteville, TN, from 1986-1989.1n October of 1989 he was selected to pastor the Stokers Lane COG Nashville, TN. where he continues to serve. Bishop Batts has been blessed to hold several positions within the Church of God Sanctified both district and national. He was consecrated as a Bishop in 2017.
Bishop Batts was employed for over thirty years in two different manufacturing organizations. He recently retired from the Bedford County, TN. Schools Special Education Dept. where he served for six years as a Behavior Specialist and four years as an aide for special needs students.
