Dr. Peters is a board-certified psychiatrist with more than three decades of service to patients through the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the College of Wooster, and earned a Doctor of Medicine in 1980 from Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Peters' interest in psychiatry developed during his clinical rotations, and while he had maintained varied interests throughout his education, he became greatly fascinated with psychiatry once he began to study the subject in-depth.
In 1986, Dr. Peters began his career with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center of Pittsburgh as a staff psychiatrist. He would be promoted to the role of the chief of psychiatry during the following year, and continued to serve at the Pittsburgh medical center for the next three decades. From 2006 until his departure in 2017, Dr. Peters was the hospital's associate chief of staff, and throughout his tenure, he held a variety of additional leadership roles, including as the associate director of the facility's Schizophrenia Research Unit and membership with the National VA Psychiatry Mentor and Behavioral Health Leadership Training Programs. In a career suffused with highlights, Dr. Peters is most proud of the work he performed in Pittsburgh with veterans of the Korean War and the Vietnam War, as well as the challenge of treating and supporting such a diverse and significant patient population.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Peters was a member of the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine from 1986 until 2017, whereupon he joined the staff of the Doris Miller Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Throughout his career, he has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades for his commitment to his patients and to the work of the Department of Veterans Affairs, including a 1993 Director's Award from the Veterans Affairs Mental Health and Behavior Science Service, a Commodore's Award front the National Association of American Ex-Prisoners of War and an American Legion Award for Homeless Services. He has been presented with a National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Mental Health, a Laughlin Award from the National Psychiatric Endowment and in 2016, was named as a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Peters is a former president of the Pittsburgh Psychiatric Society, a fellow of the Association for Academic Psychiatry, and has been previously profiled in Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who Among Young American Professionals.
