Dr. Paul is an esteemed academic administrator, researcher and professor of chemical engineering celebrating more than 50 years of service to his students and discipline. The son of a sharecropper, he worked on the family farm throughout his youth and decided to pursue a different lifestyle. His natural aptitude for science became evident in high school, and he discovered a passion for chemical engineering that would bring him to a research position with E.I DuPont in Richmond, Virginia. He continued his career at North Carolina State University, from which he obtained a Bachelor of Science in 1961. Dr. Paul concluded his education at the University of Wisconsin, where he taught chemical engineering while completing coursework, earning a Master of Science in 1963 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1965.
From 1965 to 1967, Dr. Paul served in a research position with the Chemstrand Research Center in Durham, North Carolina. He subsequently began his tenure with the University of Texas as an assistant professor of chemical engineering, advancing to the post of an associate professor in 1970, a professor in 1973, the chairman of the department of engineering in 1977 and a T. Brockett Hudson professor of chemical engineering in 1978. In 1985, Dr. Paul was designated by the University of Texas as the Melvin H. Gertz regents chair of chemical engineering.
Currently, Dr. Paul continues to teach at the University of Texas and operates as the Ernest Cockrell, Sr. senior chair of engineering. Likewise, he is active as the director of the Center for Polymer Research and the director of the Texas Materials Institute. His research focuses on the properties and treatment of polymeric materials, and has recently expanded to include work on the use of polymer membranes in water purification and reverse osmosis systems. Dr. Paul is the co-author of several books, including "Controlled Release Polymeric Formulations" in 1976, "Polymer Blends" in 1978, and "Polymer Blends: Formulation and Performance" in 2000, and he has been published in professional journals including Polymer, Science and the Journal of Membrane Science.
Throughout his career, Dr. Paul has been the recipient of dozens of accolades for his excellence in both research and teaching. Among many others, he has been presented with four University of Texas Student Engineering Council Awards, the 1989 and 1993 International Education Awards and an Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award from the University of Texas. Moreover, Dr. Paul was recognized as the winner of the American Chemical Society's Doolitte, Phillips and E.V. Murphree Awards.
Dr. Paul considers teaching to be his true calling, and describes himself as having "no chance of slowing down" in his academic duties. He looks forward to the continuation of his water purification research, particularly his experimental work in electrical dialysis, as well as to devoting more time to birdwatching and photography. As one of the preeminent voices in his specialty, Dr. Paul is a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the North American Membrane Society, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the American Chemical Society, the National Materials Advisory Board and the Fiber Society.
