Leading a diverse, successful career for nearly 40 years, Mr. Harroff divided his time between working in academic libraries and his art studio in Edwardsville, Illinois. After graduating from college, he began his career as an architectural librarian and faculty member at Oklahoma State University. Teaching illustration abroad at Oskar Kokoschka's "School of Vision" in Austria, Mr. Harroff was active as well as a librarian at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and McKendree University until retirement in 2010.
Mr. Harroff has continued to work as an artist and freelance illustrator in Edwardsville since 1985. Likewise, he has been honored to have dozens of his works featured in solo exhibitions throughout the world in addition to hundreds of other juried exhibitions. Having the good fortune of completing art residencies at the Ragdale Foundation in 1994, SUNY Plattsburgh in 1997, Tokyo's Technos University in 2006, and the New Pacific Studio in New Zealand during 2014, Mr. Harroff has been concentrating exclusively on digital artwork over the past 25 years.
As a writer, Mr. Harroff has authored articles for numerous professional art and library journals. He was also recruited as a staff writer and artist for Art St. Louis and an associate editor for the International Journal of the Book. In 2000, Mr. Harroff notably co-founded (r)Evolutionary (e)Books and the (r)Evolutionary (e)Books Press.
Leading his community, Mr. Harroff contributed as a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Edwardsville and a member of the board of directors of the Madison County Arts Council. He has maintained his involvement with the board of the Saint Louis Volunteer Lawyers and Accountants for the Arts since 1991 and as an ambassador for Reading with Pictures since 2010. Among his professional affiliations, Mr. Harroff is a respected member of Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Eta Sigma and Beta Phi Mu, winning their Frank B. Sessa Scholarship in 2003.
An Indiana native, Mr. Harroff earned an undergraduate degree at Purdue University in 1978 and a Master of Library Science at Indiana University in 1981. He also obtained a diploma from the International Sommerakademie in Austria in 1983.
Mr. Harroff has been honored to present several keynote addresses both nationally and abroad. The recipient of numerous awards for his artwork, he was honored in the Biennale for the Artists Book in 2004 and 2006 and the First International Book Exhibition in conjunction with the Cairo Biennale in 2009. He also secured numerous grants from such organizations as the Illinois Arts Council, the Governor's International Exchange Program and the National Endowment for the Arts. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Harroff has been cited in the 25th and 26th editions of Who's Who in the Midwest.
