Drawing upon decades of expertise in the fields of medicine and education, since 2009, Dr. Pary serves as a clinical psychiatrist and professor emeritus in the Department of Psychiatry with the Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine. Between 1994 to 2009, he served the Department of Psychiatry in myriad capacities, including as a clinical professor of psychiatry, electives advisor, clerkship director, assistant chairman and associate professor of psychiatry between 1994 and 2009. Driven to remain aware of changes in psychiatry, he aligns himself with the American Psychiatric Association and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, where he served as an examiner for over 40 oral exam dates in various cities between 1987 to 2015.
Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Pary earned a Bachelor of Science through Loyola University Chicago in 1973. Subsequently, he received a Doctor of Medicine from the Loyola University Medical School in 1977 and pursued a residency in psychiatry at the William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute in Columbia, South Carolina before furthering training in a fourth-year residency and post-residency work at Tufts University. While completing his medical training, he served the William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute's Reintegration-Rehabilitation Unit as a teaching psychiatrist, assistant professor, program director and director of the training program between 1982 and 1987.
In light of his professional excellence, Dr. Pary was honored with the Nancy Roeske Award through the American Psychiatric Association in 2009 and the Frank J. Menolascino Award for Excellence through the National Association for the Dually Diagnosed in 2009. Earlier, he was named SIU Department of Psychiatry Faculty Advisor of the Year in 1998 and 2002, and in 1994, received the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. In 1990, he was an honored Faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh. Earlier, he received two Directors Annual Awards for Excellence from the William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute from 1985 to 1986, as well as a Junior Faculty Development Award from the National Institute of Mental Health, 1983-1985.
A fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, he also spoke at the 2020 American Psychiatric Association on "Van Gogh paintings in Philadelphia" via Zoom. In 2021, he is scheduled to speak on "The Commitment of Vincent van Gogh and his Response" at the International Association of Law and Mental Health Congress in Lyon, France. Looking ahead, Dr. Pary intends to continue his interest in art history and psychiatry.
