SILVER SPRING, MD, September 28, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Norvell V. Coots, MD, has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. Inspired by his father, who was a physician, Norvell V. Coots wanted to pursue a career in medicine from a young age. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in liberal studies from Excelsior College, a Master of Science in strategic studies from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. He completed an internship at William Beaumont Army Medical Center and a residency in dermatology at Brooke Army Medical Center. He served as an adviser at Uniformed Services University while also serving as commander and chief executive officer of the Walter Reed Health Care System. Dr. Coots then briefly served as special assistant to the Army surgeon general, then as surgeon general and IJC medical adviser for the ISAF Joint Command and U.S. forces in Afghanistan. In his career, Dr. Coots also worked in medical positions at the Pentagon before becoming president and chief executive officer of Holy Cross Health in 2016.
In his current position, Dr. Coots is the leader of a multidisciplinary integrated Catholic health system consisting of two hospitals, four community clinics, two group practices, and community-based dialysis and radiation oncology centers. Holy Cross Hospital is the second-largest hospital in the state with 423 licensed beds and is now the number one center for live births in the state of Maryland. Additionally, Holy Cross Germantown Hospital was the first new hospital in the state when it opened in 2014. The Holy Cross Health Network as a whole works to provide access to quality health care service to underserved and undocumented residents of Montgomery County in Maryland.
With more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Coots has gained expertise in all aspects of health care management and medical administration. His professional background has consisted of leadership roles in complex health systems and challenging environments, including combat theaters in the field. Over the years, he has proven to be an experienced physician executive with demonstrated expertise in communications, team building and organizational leadership. For his military service, he was presented with the Distinguished Service Medal and the Defense Superior Service Medal. He also received the Legion of Honor from the Republic of France. In addition, he received the Distinguished Healthcare Leadership Award from the National Association of Health Service Executives and the U.S. India SME Council Exceptional Healthcare Executive of the Year award.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Coots has attributed his success to his persistence. He maintains professional affiliation with the American Medical Association, the National Medical Association, the American Academy of Dermatology, and its Leadership Circle for Volunteerism. In the coming years, he plans to remain on his current path to success.
