Amassing more than 50 years to his career as an environmentalist and educator, Dr. Larson retired in 2000 as a professor emeritus of natural resources conservation with the Environmental Institute at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass). His tenured position at the university, which began in 1969, was offered to him after a serving as a wildlife research biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Additionally, Dr. Larson enjoyed several other roles in the field, including as the head of the conservation education division and a research assistant professor at the Natural Resources Institute of the University of Maryland, a state ornithologist at the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife in Boston, and the executive secretary at Wildlife Conservation Inc.
An expert in beaver behavior, Dr. Larson was responsible for the development of a technique for using blood to identify the animal's gender. He also extensively studied the functions and values of freshwater wetlands and successfully developed models for predicting their various functions and for identifying wetland habitat indicators for wetland dependent amphibians, reptiles and mammals. Widely published, Dr. Larson has contributed articles to various professional journals, authored several wetland publications through UMass Amherst and was the senior author of "Handbook on Fence Viewers and Laws on Fences in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts."
During the course of his illustrious career, Dr. Larson provided his expertise as the executive chairperson of the National Wetlands Technical Council Conservation Foundation and the Environmental Law Institute between 1971 and 1998. He was also a delegate to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Assembly in Costa Rica in 1987 and Australia in 1990, as well as a delegate member of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance in Canada in 1987, in Switzerland in 1990 and in Japan in 1993. Between 1984 and 2000, Dr. Larson also chaired the advisory committee of the National Environmental Technology Waste Prevention Institute at UMass Amherst.
In retirement, Dr. Larson has served on the Massachusetts Natural Heritage Advisory Committee since 2000. The committee is affiliated with the division of fisheries and wildlife and focuses on the natural heritage and endangered species program. He has also sat on the Massachusetts Fisheries and Wildlife Board since 2000. Dr. Larson co-founded Preserve UMass Amherst in 2007 as well, which is comprised of a private group of alumni, active and retired faculty, staff and friends of the university involved with the historic assets of the campus in Amherst.
Dr. Larson studied at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he acquired a Bachelor of Science in wildlife biology in 1956 and a Master of Science in wildlife and forestry in 1958. Continuing his education, he subsequently attained a Doctor of Philosophy in zoology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1966. Dr. Larson is a certified wetland biologist, senior ecologist and professional wetland scientist.
Affiliated with several prominent industry organizations as a commitment to his field, Dr. Larson is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Association of Mammologists, the Ecological Society of America, the Wildlife Society, and the Society of Wetland Scientists. Among other affiliations, he is a member and past president of the Massachusetts chapter of the American Association of University Professors. Dr. Larson's accomplishments in the field have led to recognition with an Excellence Award in Conservation of Natural Landscape from Design and Environment Magazine in 1976 and a Chevron Conservation Award in 1990. He was also named as the Conservationist of the Year by the Massachusetts Wildlife Federation in 1997 and received a Director's Award from the Northeast Science Center at the National Marine Fisheries Service in 2000. For his service in the U.S. Army Reserve between 1951 and 1963, Dr. Larson was bestowed with an Armed Forces Reserve Medal.
