Harboring many years of experience in behavioral therapy and psychological services, Dr. Batkins has excelled as a licensed and board-certified psychologist with Blue Ridge Psychological Services. An expert in cognitive behavior therapy, as well as children and adolescent psychology, he previously worked as a senior partner with the Behavioral Institute of Atlanta, an assistant professor and clinic coordinator for Winthrop University and the University of South Carolina, and the chief of emergency and child and adolescent services at a regional mental health center. In addition to these positions, Dr. Batkins was active as a center director and founding member of the mental health staff for the Department of Juvenile Justice. Before pursuing his professional ventures, Dr. Batkins earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology, magna cum laude, from Old Dominion University in 1972. He subsequently concluded his studies at the University of Tennessee in 1982, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy with a major in psychology. Licensed as a psychologist in the state of Georgia, he was also nationally board-certified as a couples and family psychologist. Moreover, Dr. Batkins is trained to level three of the Gottman Method of Marriage Therapy, and as a mediator.
Dr. Batkins has additionally participated in numerous endeavors beyond his primary responsibilities in the field. Having provided his wealth of knowledge as a Sunday School teacher, he contributed to the Atlanta Center for Cognitive Therapy as a student consultant and at the center for cognitive therapy at University of Pennsylvania . He has also dedicated his time and resources as the vice president of behavioral health and wellness for Warrior 2 Citizen, as a board member for a local homeless shelter, a facilitator for grief and foster groups, a liturgist and an administrative committee member for churches and a volunteer for nonprofit organizations. Recruited as an expert commentator for such media outlets as CNN, PBS, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Atlanta Magazine, among others, Dr. Batkins found success with his written works as well, co-authoring a chapter for "Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Depressed Teens."
Dr. Batkins has been associated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise, including Rotary International, the World War II Roundtable and the American Legion, as well as with the Atlanta Vietnam Veterans Business Association and the Disabled American Veterans as a lifetime member. Furthermore, he was formerly affiliated with the Georgia Psychological Association as the treasurer for the division of licensed psychologists. Furthermore, Dr. Batkins held a number of positions with the American Board of Couple and Family Psychology, including as the president of the board and the head evaluator for the Eastern United States for board certification candidates.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Batkins has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. He was notably recognized as a fellow of the American Board of Couple and Family Psychology and a listee in Marquis Who's Who in America. As a testament to his exemplary military service, he was presented with a Purple Heart, a Presidential Unit Citation, a Vietnam Campaign Medal with Four Stars and a Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster.
